El Salvador International Airport Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez (SAL), formerly Cuscatlán and often called Comalapa, is the country's main international airport. It sits in San Luis Talpa, La Paz department, on the Pacific lowlands south of the capital, so expect heat and humidity as you step out.
All flights use one terminal complex. Its new arrivals area, opened in June 2026, has expanded immigration, a larger baggage hall and a separate carousel for surfboards. Customs is paperless: officers scan your passport.
El Salvador is on Central Standard Time (UTC−6) all year, with no daylight saving time.
Tourist card on arrival. Most visa-exempt visitors, including travelers from the US, Canada and the EU, buy a tourist card at immigration, so keep cash ready. Nationalities that need a visa apply in advance through El Salvador's eVisa system.
Customs declaration. Only travelers carrying more than US$10,000, weapons or goods not for personal use need to declare.
US dollars. The US dollar is El Salvador's everyday currency, so there is no need to change money at the airport if you carry dollars.
Rainy season. Roughly May to October brings afternoon storms, so leave some slack in plans on arrival days.
