Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt (HAM) is the main airport of Hamburg, Germany, in the district of Fuhlsbüttel. About 55 airlines fly here, with around 120 direct destinations in some 40 countries. Lufthansa and Eurowings connect the city with Frankfurt, Munich and other German and European cities, Condor and Marabu fly to the Canary Islands, Greece and other holiday coasts, and Emirates, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines link Hamburg with Dubai, Doha and Istanbul.
The airport has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, joined by the Airport Plaza, which holds the central security checkpoint, shops and the S-Bahn station. Departures are on level 1 and arrivals on level 0.
The airport sits about 8.5 km (5.3 miles) north of the city center. The S1 S-Bahn runs every 10 minutes to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, a trip of about 25 minutes, and taxis wait in front of both terminals.
From the airport, most travelers head to the city center around the Hauptbahnhof and the Alster lakes, the HafenCity and Speicherstadt warehouse district, Altona, the cruise terminals on the Elbe, and Kiel on the Baltic coast.

If you arrive from outside the Schengen Area, you go through passport control first. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Flights from other Schengen countries arrive without a passport check.
Baggage claim is on level 0, the arrival level, with 12 baggage belts. After collecting your bags, pass through customs and into the arrival hall of Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.
Outside, taxis wait at the stands in front of both terminals on the arrival level and accept cash or cards. Pre-booked drivers usually wait in the arrival hall, and the short-stay garages P2 and P4 sit directly opposite the terminals. For the S1 S-Bahn, take the lift, escalator or stairs from the arrival level down to the station under the Airport Plaza. Use only the official taxi stands rather than drivers who approach you inside.

Pre-booked drivers meet you in the arrival hall and take you straight to your address. It needs to be arranged before you land.
Buses 274, 292 and X95 stop in front of Terminal 1 on the arrival level, and night bus 606 runs to Rathausmarkt and Hauptbahnhof/ZOB. Buses are slower than the S1 for the city center.
