Sobre Carrasco General Cesáreo L. Berisso International Airport

Carrasco General Cesáreo L. Berisso International Airport (MVD) is the main airport serving Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. It is the country's busiest airport and its primary international gateway.

Flights connect Montevideo with Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, Lima, Bogotá, Panama City and Asunción, along with several other Brazilian cities and long-haul routes to Madrid and, seasonally, Miami. Airlines include Aerolíneas Argentinas, GOL, LATAM Airlines, Sky Airline, Copa Airlines, Iberia and Air Europa.

All passengers use one terminal, designed by Rafael Viñoly and opened in 2009, with arrivals and departures on separate floors and a viewing terrace on the top level.

The airport is in Ciudad de la Costa, Canelones, about 19 km from downtown Montevideo, beside the start of the Ruta Interbalnearia, the coastal highway east to Punta del Este. Punta del Este is about two hours away by road. From here, travelers head to downtown Montevideo and Ciudad Vieja, the Carrasco and Pocitos neighborhoods, Punta del Este, José Ignacio, Piriápolis and Colonia del Sacramento.

Consejos de llegada a Carrasco General Cesáreo L. Berisso International Airport

When you land, you pass through immigration first; bring a valid passport and check whether your nationality needs a visa, while citizens of Mercosur countries can travel with their national ID card. Customs follows baggage claim, and fresh fruit, vegetables, plants, meat and many animal products are restricted, so declare any food you carry. Luggage trolleys are available in the baggage hall.

After customs you enter the arrivals hall, where a 24-hour exchange office and the airport information desk are located. The official taxi counter is staffed 24 hours inside the hall, and buses to Montevideo and Punta del Este stop in front of the terminal. If you booked a driver, look for your name sign as you exit customs. Ignore unsolicited ride offers and use the counters, the bus stop or your confirmed ride.

Uruguay uses the Uruguayan peso (UYU) and stays on UTC−3 all year. Summer runs from December to February and winter from June to August.

Transporte terrestre

Airport taxis and app rides suit most travelers heading into Montevideo, while the direct COT bus is the main public option to Punta del Este.

  • Taxi from Montevideo airport

The official taxi counter in the ground-floor arrivals hall is staffed 24 hours and also sells shared vans. Taxis take about 30 to 40 minutes to central Montevideo and 1.5 to 2 hours to Punta del Este.

  • Bus to Montevideo

CUTCSA, COPSA and COT buses stop in front of the terminal and run several times an hour toward Montevideo. The ride takes about 45 minutes to the Tres Cruces bus terminal and about an hour to the city center, with limited space for large bags.

  • Bus to Punta del Este

COT runs direct buses from the airport to Punta del Este from early morning to late evening, stopping at Piriápolis and Maldonado along the way. The trip takes about two hours, and not every departure stops at the airport, so check the timetable.

  • Rideshare

Uber operates at Carrasco airport, and the app directs you to a pickup point on an upper level, away from the arrivals curb. It works well for Montevideo neighborhoods, though the walk to the pickup point takes a few minutes.

  • Private transfer

A pre-booked driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. It is the most direct option for groups or late arrivals heading to Punta del Este or José Ignacio but must be arranged in advance.

How many terminals does Montevideo airport have?

Carrasco International Airport has a single passenger terminal for all domestic and international flights.
