Sobre Tunis–Carthage International Airport

Tunis–Carthage International Airport (TUN) is the international airport serving Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, and the wider Greater Tunis area. It is the hub of Tunisair, which flies from here to cities across Europe, North and West Africa and the Middle East, while Tunisair Express covers domestic and short regional routes such as Djerba and Tozeur. Nouvelair and Transavia link Tunis with many cities in France and the rest of Europe, and other airlines include Air France, Lufthansa, ITA Airways, Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir, Emirates and Qatar Airways.

Scheduled flights use Terminal 1, a two-level building with departures and arrivals on separate floors. Terminal 2 is used mainly for charter flights, and a shuttle bus links the two.

The airport sits about 8 km northeast of downtown Tunis, usually a 15 to 25 minute drive to Avenue Habib Bourguiba outside rush hours. Carthage is about 16 km away by road.

From the airport, travelers head to the city center and the Medina, Les Berges du Lac, La Goulette, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, La Marsa and Gammarth, or south along the coast to Hammamet, about 70 km away.

Consejos de llegada a Tunis–Carthage International Airport

After you leave the aircraft, follow the signs to passport control. Citizens of many countries can enter Tunisia without a visa for a short stay, and there is no e-visa system, so check the rules for your nationality before you fly.

Scheduled flights arrive at Terminal 1, where arrivals are on the ground floor; charter flights mainly use Terminal 2. Collect your bags in the baggage claim hall, then pass through customs into the arrivals hall. ATMs and currency exchange counters are in the arrivals area. The Tunisian dinar cannot be bought outside the country, so this is where most travelers get local cash, and some ATMs do not accept every international card.

Yellow metered taxis wait at the rank outside the terminal: ask the driver to use the meter, and turn down ride offers from unofficial drivers inside the hall. Car rental desks are in the arrivals hall, and pre-booked drivers wait at the exit with a name sign.

Tunisia is on Central European Time (UTC+1) all year, with no daylight saving time.

Transporte terrestre

Taxis and pre-booked transfers suit most travelers with luggage, while city buses run only during the day.

  • Taxi from Tunis airport

Yellow metered taxis wait at the rank outside the arrivals hall and take about 20 minutes to downtown Tunis outside rush hours. Insist on the meter; fares rise at night and luggage is charged extra.

  • Bus to downtown Tunis

Public city buses leave from outside the arrivals hall for central Tunis and run fairly regularly during the day, but not at night. They are cheap but slow and awkward with large suitcases.

  • Car rental

Avis, Budget, Hertz and Sixt have desks in the arrivals hall. Driving in and around Tunis takes care, especially at rush hours.

  • Private transfer

Pre-booked drivers meet passengers at the exit of the arrivals hall with a name sign and drive directly to hotels in Tunis, Les Berges du Lac, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, La Marsa, Gammarth or Hammamet. This suits families and groups with luggage.

Tunis–Carthage International Airport has two passenger terminals. Terminal 1 is the main building and handles scheduled flights, with departures and arrivals on separate floors. Which airlines fly to Tunis–Carthage International Airport?

Tunisair is the main airline at Tunis–Carthage and uses it as its hub, with Tunisair Express flying domestic and short regional routes such as Djerba and Tozeur. Other airlines include Air France, Lufthansa, Eurowings, ITA Airways, Aegean Airlines, Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, Emirates and Qatar Airways.

How do I get a taxi at Tunis airport?

Yellow metered taxis wait at the taxi rank outside the arrivals hall. Ask the driver to switch on the meter before you leave, and turn down offers from unofficial drivers inside the terminal. Fares go up at night and luggage is charged extra. The ride to downtown Tunis takes about 20 minutes outside rush hours.

Is there a bus from Tunis airport to the city center?

Yes. Public city buses leave from outside the arrivals hall for central Tunis and run fairly regularly during the day, though not at night. They are much cheaper than a taxi but slower, and they are not easy with large suitcases. Ask at the information desk in the arrivals hall for the current route number.

Can I take the train from Tunis airport to Carthage or Sidi Bou Said?

Not directly. Tunis–Carthage airport has no rail station. The TGM suburban train runs from Tunis Marine station, near the end of Avenue Habib Bourguiba, to La Goulette, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa. To use it, first reach Tunis Marine by bus or taxi from the airport, then change to the train.

Can I change money at Tunis–Carthage airport?

Yes. Currency exchange counters and ATMs are in the arrivals and departures areas. The Tunisian dinar (TND) is a closed currency that cannot be bought or exchanged outside Tunisia, so the airport is the usual place to get local cash on arrival. Some ATMs do not accept every international card, so it is worth carrying a backup card or some euros.

Do I need a visa to enter Tunisia?

It depends on your nationality. Citizens of many countries can enter Tunisia without a visa for a short stay, usually up to three months, while others must get a visa from a Tunisian embassy or consulate before they travel. Tunisia has no e-visa system, so a visa cannot be arranged online. Check the current rules for your passport before you fly.

What time zone does Tunis use?

Tunis is on Central European Time, UTC+1, all year, and Tunisia does not use daylight saving time. That means Tunis is on the same clock as Paris and Rome in winter but one hour behind them in summer. The currency is the Tunisian dinar (TND).

How do I get from Tunis airport to Sidi Bou Said, La Marsa or Gammarth?

Sidi Bou Said, La Marsa and Gammarth are on the coast northeast of Tunis, beyond Carthage, which is about 16 km from the airport by road. The simplest way there with luggage is a taxi or a pre-booked transfer. Without bags, you can travel into the city and take the TGM train from Tunis Marine to Sidi Bou Said or La Marsa.

How far is Hammamet from Tunis airport?

Hammamet is about 70 km from Tunis–Carthage International Airport, on the coast of Nabeul Governorate to the southeast. Travelers usually reach it by taxi, rental car or pre-booked transfer along the motorway. Hammamet has no airport of its own; Enfidha–Hammamet International Airport (NBE) is a separate airport further south, so check which one your flight uses.

Is Tunis–Carthage the same airport as Enfidha–Hammamet?

No. Tunis–Carthage International Airport (TUN) serves Tunis and the capital region. Enfidha–Hammamet International Airport (NBE) is a different airport south of Hammamet, toward Sousse, with its own flights. Some holiday and charter tickets to the Hammamet area use NBE, so check that your ticket shows the code TUN before you plan your trip from the airport.

Who operates Tunis–Carthage airport and how busy is it?

Tunis–Carthage International Airport is operated by the Tunisian Civil Aviation and Airports Authority (OACA), which has its head office on the airport grounds. The airport handled 7,249,701 passengers in 2024, up 8.8 percent on 2023. It has two asphalt runways, 3,200 m and 2,840 m long, and is the hub of Tunisair.

Is there parking at Tunis–Carthage airport?
