Sobre Tocumen International Airport

Tocumen International Airport (PTY) is the main international airport of Panama City, Panama. It lies in the Tocumen area, about 24 km east of the city, and connects to it by the Corredor Sur expressway and Avenida Domingo Díaz. About 21 million passengers used it in 2025.

The airport is the hub of Copa Airlines, which flies to more than 80 destinations across North, Central and South America and the Caribbean, and many travelers pass through only to change planes. Other airlines include American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Avianca, Iberia, Air Europa, Air France, KLM, Turkish Airlines and Aeroméxico, with routes to cities such as Miami, Houston, Atlanta, Bogotá, Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, Istanbul and Mexico City.

There are two passenger terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which opened to passengers in 2022 and is Copa's main terminal. A pedestrian corridor and a free shuttle bus link them, and a Panama Metro Line 2 station sits next to the terminals.

From the airport, travelers head to Panama City areas such as Casco Viejo, the banking district and the Amador Causeway, to the Panama Canal at Miraflores, to the Pacific beaches of Coronado and Playa Blanca, and to Colón on the Caribbean coast.

Consejos de llegada a Tocumen International Airport

After landing, you go through immigration, where lines can be long when several flights arrive together. Check the passport and visa rules for your nationality before you fly.

Collect your bags and pass customs. If you flew Copa Airlines and your plane parked at a Terminal 1 gate, follow the signs to Terminal 2, where Copa passengers collect their bags.

Outside arrivals, official airport taxis wait at the curb; they are not metered, so agree the fare and destination before you get in. Pre-booked drivers wait outside the customs exit with a name sign. Ignore people who approach you offering rides, as they are not linked to the airport. Uber pickups use a separate point in the parking garage outside Terminal 2, and the Metro station is a short walk from arrivals.

Panama is hot and humid all year, with a rainy season from about May to November. It uses the US dollar alongside the balboa, and clocks stay on UTC−5 with no daylight saving time.

Transporte terrestre

Most travelers take an official taxi, a rideshare or a pre-booked transfer into Panama City; the Metro suits light travelers.

  • Taxi from Tocumen airport

Official airport taxis wait directly outside arrivals. Fares are agreed before you leave rather than metered, so confirm the price and drop-off first. The drive downtown takes about 35 minutes and can pass an hour in rush-hour traffic.

  • Rideshare

Uber operates at the airport around the clock, but drivers cannot pick up at the arrivals curb; the pickup point is in the parking garage outside Terminal 2. Waits can be longer very early or late at night.

  • Metro Line 2

Since March 2023 a Line 2 branch has served an Aeropuerto station a 5 to 10 minute walk from arrivals. Ride two stops to Corredor Sur and change toward the city; reaching downtown takes about an hour with transfers, and trains do not run overnight.

  • Private transfer

A pre-booked driver meets you outside customs and takes you straight to your hotel. It must be arranged in advance and suits families, groups, late arrivals and trips beyond the city.
