Chania International Airport Ioannis Daskalogiannis (CHQ) is on the Akrotiri peninsula above Souda Bay, east of Chania, and Fraport Greece runs it. All flights use one passenger terminal, with arrivals and baggage claim on the ground floor; the airfield is shared with the Hellenic Air Force.
Flights from Athens and other Schengen countries arrive without passport checks. If you come from outside the Schengen area, as many summer visitors do from the UK, you line up at passport control. On summer days, when many seasonal flights land close together, passport control and baggage claim can be slow. After customs you walk out into the arrivals area, where pre-booked drivers meet passengers.
Crete is on Eastern European Time (UTC+2), and UTC+3 from late March to late October. Greece uses the euro.
Schengen entry. Greece is in the Schengen area. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) at passport control. Check the visa rules for your nationality before you fly.
Villa addresses. Many villas in western Crete are in hill villages or on rural roads without street numbers, so give the villa name, the village and a map pin or the owner's directions.
Old town streets. Much of Chania's old town around the Venetian harbor is pedestrian, so your driver stops at the nearest point a car can reach.
Military airfield. The runway is shared with a Hellenic Air Force base, and photographing military aircraft and installations is not allowed.
