Salgado Filho International Airport (POA) is Porto Alegre's airport, in the Anchieta district on the north side of the city, and is run by Fraport Brasil. All passenger flights, domestic and international, use one building, Terminal 1; the old Terminal 2 is now offices, so there is no terminal change to make. The airport reopened fully on December 16, 2024, after the May 2024 floods.
On an international flight you clear Federal Police passport control, then collect your bags in Terminal 1 and pass Receita Federal customs. Keep your baggage tag, as staff may check it at the exit. Once you are out of the arrivals area, the official taxi stand and the ride-app pickup point are just outside on the arrivals level, while pre-booked drivers wait inside the hall.
Porto Alegre runs on Brasília time (UTC-3) all year, with no daylight saving time.
Requisitos de entrada y notas locales
Brazil e-visa. US, Canadian and Australian citizens have needed an approved Brazil e-visa again since April 10, 2025, and airlines check it before boarding. Many European and South American travelers can visit visa-free; check the rules for your passport before you fly.
Ride offers in the hall. Turn down anyone offering a ride inside the terminal. Use only the official Cootaero taxi stand, a ride app or the driver named in your confirmation.
Four seasons. Unlike tropical Brazil, Porto Alegre has cool, damp winters from June to August, and nights in the Serra Gaúcha hills are colder still, so keep a warm layer in your hand luggage if you are heading to Gramado or Canela.
Brazilian real. Brazil uses the real (BRL). Cards are widely accepted, but a little cash helps for small purchases.
