José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE) sits on Avenida de las Américas, inside the city of Guayaquil and north of downtown. It is Ecuador's second-busiest airport and a main gateway for flights to the Galápagos Islands.
All flights use one passenger terminal, opened in 2006. After landing you pass immigration, where officers may ask about your trip and for proof of onward or return travel, then collect your bags and clear customs. Domestic and international arrivals have separate exits into the ground-floor arrivals hall.
Guayaquil runs on Ecuador time, UTC-5, all year with no daylight saving time. The city is hot and humid year-round, with most rain falling roughly between January and May.
Passport and onward ticket. Most visitors need a passport valid for at least six months from arrival, and immigration may ask for proof of onward or return travel. Visa rules vary by nationality.
Customs registration. An online customs registration is only needed if you carry taxable goods or 10,000 US dollars or more in cash.
Galápagos Transit Control Card. Flying on to Baltra or San Cristóbal? Pre-register online, then validate the card at the Galápagos Government Council office in the upper-level departures hall, open 6:00 to 12:00. Bags are inspected before check-in, so plan to arrive early.
US dollars. Ecuador uses the US dollar, so there is no local currency to exchange if you already carry dollars.
