Penang International Airport (PEN) is in Bayan Lepas, at the southeastern tip of Penang Island, and Malaysia Airports runs it. All flights use one terminal with separate domestic and international sections; arrivals are on Level 1 and departures on Level 2. An expansion of the terminal is under way, so expect some construction.
On international flights you clear Malaysian immigration, collect your bags and pass customs before entering the arrivals hall, where pre-booked drivers meet passengers. Domestic flights from Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and other Malaysian cities arrive in their own area of the same hall.
Malaysia is on Malaysia Time (UTC+8) all year, with no daylight saving time, and uses the ringgit.
Entry requirements and local notes
Digital arrival card. Most foreign visitors must submit the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) on the Immigration Department's official website within three days before arrival. Many nationalities enter Malaysia without a visa for short stays; check the rules for your passport before you fly.
Driving on the left. Malaysia drives on the left, so vehicles load and unload at the left-hand curb.
George Town heritage streets. Many streets in the George Town heritage zone are narrow and one-way, so give your full address; your driver stops at the nearest point a car can reach.
Domestic or international arrivals. Domestic and international flights arrive in separate areas of the arrivals hall, so check which one your flight uses before you look for your driver.
