Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA), also known as Rinas or Mother Teresa Airport, stands in Rinas, northwest of Tirana. All flights use one passenger terminal, with arrivals on the ground floor.
Albania is outside the EU and the Schengen area, so every international arrival goes through passport control; e-gates read Albanian, EU, UK, US and Canadian passports, and other travelers use the staffed desks. Lines can build on summer afternoons, when many flights land together. After baggage claim you walk through customs into the arrivals hall, where pre-booked drivers meet passengers and ATMs and exchange desks are close by.
Albania is on Central European Time (UTC+1) and switches to UTC+2 for daylight saving time from late March to late October. It uses the Albanian lek.
Entry to Albania. Albania is outside the EU and Schengen, and the EU Entry/Exit System does not apply here. Citizens of the EU, the UK, Canada and many other countries visit visa-free for up to 90 days, and US citizens for up to a year; EU citizens can enter with a national ID card. Check the rules for your nationality before you fly.
Lek and euros. Albania uses the lek. Euros are often accepted in tourist areas, but change usually comes in lek, so use the ATMs in arrivals for local cash.
Mobile roaming. Albania is not covered by EU roaming deals, so check your plan or buy a local SIM card at the shop in arrivals.
Addresses in Tirana. Street numbers are not always used, so give your hotel or apartment name, the street and a nearby landmark, and keep your host's phone number handy.
