Sobre Silvio Pettirossi International Airport

Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) is the main airport serving Asunción, the capital of Paraguay. It sits in the neighboring city of Luque and is the busiest airport in the country.

Flights link Asunción with South American hubs such as Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Santiago, Lima, Bogotá, Panama City and Santa Cruz de la Sierra, plus a long-haul route to Madrid. Paranair, the Paraguayan carrier, runs the widest regional network from the airport, with flights to Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Brazil and Uruguay.

All flights use one terminal building, opened in 1980, with two concourses: the south concourse (gates 1–4) and the north concourse (gates 5–6), whose arrivals hall was expanded in 2023. The airport shares its single runway with the Ñu Guasú Air Force Base.

The airport is about 10 km from downtown Asunción and is reached by Aviadores del Chaco Avenue, which runs beside Ñu Guasú Park. From here, travelers head to downtown Asunción, the Villa Morra and Carmelitas districts, Luque, San Lorenzo, San Bernardino on Lake Ypacaraí, Ciudad del Este and Encarnación.

Consejos de llegada a Silvio Pettirossi International Airport

After you leave the plane, you go through immigration, where you need a valid passport and, depending on your nationality, a visa; citizens of Mercosur countries can enter with their national ID card. Customs comes right after baggage claim in the same single terminal, so the walk from the gate to the exit is short.

Once you collect your bags, head through customs into the arrivals hall. Taxis wait outside the terminal, and ride-hailing apps such as Bolt and Uber pick up at the airport; signs mark the app pickup points, and you should check that the car and driver match the app before you get in. If you booked a driver, look for your name sign in the arrivals hall. Turn down offers from people approaching you inside the building and go to the taxi stand or your confirmed ride instead.

Asunción summers are hot and humid. Paraguay uses the guaraní (PYG) and keeps UTC−3 all year.

Transporte terrestre

Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the most direct way for most travelers to reach Asunción from the airport.

  • Taxi from Asunción airport

Taxis wait outside the terminal. They are the simplest option if you have luggage, but agree on the trip details with the driver before you set off.

  • Rideshare

Bolt, Uber and the local app MUV operate at the airport, with pickup points shown in the app and on signs. Wait times depend on demand, especially when several flights land together.

  • Private transfer

A pre-booked driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. It suits late-night arrivals and groups but needs to be arranged before you fly.

  • Bus to Asunción

City bus line 30-A connects the terminal with downtown Asunción. It is the low-cost option but slow and crowded for travelers with large bags.

  • Car rental

Rental desks, including Avis and Hertz, operate at the airport. Driving gives flexibility for trips to San Bernardino or beyond, though city traffic in Asunción can be heavy.
