Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is the main airport of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It is the headquarters and main hub of Wizz Air and a base for Ryanair, and it handled about 19.6 million passengers in 2025.
Most flights link Budapest with cities across Europe, including London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Vienna and Istanbul. Longer routes reach Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai and, in summer, Philadelphia and Toronto.
Passenger flights use Terminal 2, which has two buildings, 2A and 2B, joined by the SkyCourt hall. Check-in halls are assigned by airline, and gates are split between Schengen and non-Schengen areas.
The airport sits about 16 km southeast of central Budapest, and the drive to the center usually takes 25 to 35 minutes, longer at rush hour. The 100E express bus runs directly to Deák Ferenc tér in the heart of Pest.
From the airport, most travelers head to central Budapest on both sides of the Danube, from the Buda Castle district to downtown Pest. Others continue to Lake Balaton or the Danube Bend towns of Szentendre and Esztergom.

If you arrive on a flight from outside the Schengen area, you pass passport control before reaching baggage claim; flights from Schengen countries arrive without passport checks. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation.
After collecting your luggage and walking through customs, you enter the arrivals hall, which has an information desk, currency exchange, ATMs and car rental desks. A signposted meeting point near the exit is where pre-booked drivers usually wait.
Official Főtaxi cabs are ordered at the taxi stands just outside the arrivals exits of 2A and 2B. Ignore anyone who offers you a ride inside the terminal. The 100E bus stop to the city center is also right outside arrivals.
Budapest has warm summers and cold winters. Hungary uses Central European Time with daylight saving time, and the currency is the Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro.
The 100E express bus suits most travelers heading to central Budapest, while a taxi or private transfer is simpler with heavy luggage or late at night.
The 100E express runs 24 hours from outside arrivals to Kálvin tér, Astoria and Deák Ferenc tér, taking about 35 to 40 minutes. It needs its own airport shuttle ticket; a regular public transport ticket is not valid.
Bus 200E runs to Kőbánya-Kispest, where you change to metro line M3 into the city. The trip takes about 45 to 60 minutes and makes more stops than the 100E.
Főtaxi is the airport's official taxi partner, with stands outside the arrivals exits of 2A and 2B. The ride to the center usually takes 25 to 35 minutes, longer in rush hour.
Uber and Bolt both work at the airport and dispatch licensed taxis. Uber has a marked pickup point at Terminal 2A.
Bus 200E connects to Ferihegy railway station, where trains run to Nyugati station in about 30 minutes. It involves a change, so it suits light travelers.
A pre-booked driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to your address. It needs to be arranged before you land.

Terminals 2A and 2B are joined by the SkyCourt hall, so you walk between them; no bus or train is needed.
After security, the two buildings connect airside, so transfer passengers can move between gate areas without leaving the secure zone.
Moving between Schengen and non-Schengen gates means passing passport control, so allow extra time for these connections.
Counter assignments can change, so confirm whether your flight checks in at 2A or 2B on the airport screens or with your airline.

Check-in building used by low-cost airlines and several long-haul carriers. Its gates serve non-Schengen flights, which pass passport control.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is about 16 km southeast of central Budapest. By taxi or car, the trip usually takes 25 to 35 minutes, and it can take longer during rush hour or after major events. The 100E express bus reaches Deák Ferenc tér in the heart of Pest in about 35 to 40 minutes.
The airport lies within the wider Budapest area, on its southeastern edge, about 16 km from the city center. It is linked to central Budapest by road and by public transport, including the 100E express bus and the 200E bus, which connects to metro line M3 and to Ferihegy railway station.
Passenger flights use Terminal 2, which has two buildings, 2A and 2B, joined by the SkyCourt hall. You can walk between them in a few minutes. The older Terminal 1 is no longer used for commercial passenger flights. Gates are divided between Schengen and non-Schengen areas, with passport control between them.
Wizz Air, Ryanair and easyJet check in at Terminal 2B, along with British Airways, Emirates and several other carriers. Full-service European airlines such as Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, Austrian and Turkish Airlines check in at Terminal 2A. Counter assignments can change, so confirm your building on the airport screens or with your airline.
Főtaxi is the official taxi partner at Budapest airport, with stands just outside the arrivals exits of Terminals 2A and 2B. Taxis run around the clock, and the ride to the city center usually takes 25 to 35 minutes. Ignore anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride, and use only the official stands.
Yes. The 100E express bus runs 24 hours from arrivals to Kálvin tér, Astoria and Deák Ferenc tér, taking about 35 to 40 minutes, and it needs its own ticket. Bus 200E runs to Kőbánya-Kispest for metro line M3, and also to Ferihegy railway station, where trains go to Nyugati station.
Yes. Both Uber and Bolt work at Budapest airport, and in Hungary both apps dispatch licensed taxis rather than private drivers. Uber has a marked pickup point at Terminal 2A, and larger XL vehicles are requested from Terminal 2B. The ride to the center takes about as long as a regular taxi, usually 25 to 35 minutes.
Hungary is part of the EU and the Schengen area. If you fly in from outside Schengen, you pass passport control on arrival. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Check visa requirements for your nationality before you travel.
There is no train station at the passenger terminal itself. Bus 200E links Terminal 2 with Ferihegy railway station, where trains run to Nyugati station in central Budapest in about 30 minutes. Because the trip needs a bus and a train, most travelers find the direct 100E bus simpler.
Lake Balaton lies southwest of Budapest, and most travelers reach it by car, private transfer, or by going into the city first and taking a train or long-distance bus. From the airport, a road trip avoids changes in central Budapest. Check timetables before you travel, as rail and bus connections leave from city stations rather than the airport.
Budapest is on Central European Time, UTC+1, and moves to summer time, UTC+2, from late March to late October. Hungary uses the Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro, although cards are widely accepted. Summers are warm and winters are cold, so pack for the season.
Budapest Airport Ltd. runs the airport under a concession operated by Vinci Airports, with the Hungarian state as majority owner. The airport handled about 19.6 million passengers in 2025. Wizz Air has its headquarters and main hub here, and Ryanair keeps a base at the airport.
