Sobre Keflavík International Airport

Keflavík International Airport (KEF) serves Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, and handles nearly all of the country's international flights. It saw about 8.1 million passengers in 2025, with 28 airlines flying to 100 destinations that year.

Icelandair is based here and connects Iceland with cities across Europe and North America, including London, Copenhagen, Paris, New York, Boston, Toronto and Seattle. Other airlines include easyJet, SAS, Wizz Air, Jet2.com, British Airways, Lufthansa, Finnair and, mostly in summer, Delta, United, Air Canada and WestJet.

Everything runs from one terminal, known as Leifsstöð. Flights to Schengen countries use one side, while flights to the UK, North America and other non-Schengen destinations use a separate gate area with passport control.

The airport sits on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 50 km southwest of Reykjavík, and the drive takes about 45 minutes on Route 41. From here, travelers head to Reykjavík, the Blue Lagoon, Hafnarfjörður and the nearby town of Keflavík.

Consejos de llegada a Keflavík International Airport

Iceland is in the Schengen Area but not the EU, so you only pass passport control if you arrive from outside Schengen, such as from the UK or North America. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which Iceland uses at its borders and which has been fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation.

Collect your bags in the baggage hall and walk through customs into the arrivals hall. Lockers for luggage are just outside the arrivals hall.

Flybus and other airport coaches stop just outside the terminal, and taxis line up in front of the building around the clock. Public bus 55 leaves from the Kjóavellir stop about 150 meters away, where rental cars are also collected. Pre-booked drivers wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign. Uber and Lyft do not operate in Iceland.

Iceland stays on UTC+0 all year and uses the Icelandic króna (ISK). The weather changes quickly, so keep warm, waterproof layers handy.

Transporte terrestre

Most travelers heading to Reykjavík take the Flybus or another airport coach, while a taxi or private transfer suits groups and late-night arrivals.

  • Flybus to Reykjavík

Flybus coaches leave from just outside the terminal about 35 to 45 minutes after each flight lands and reach the BSÍ bus terminal in about 45 minutes. A connecting minibus to hotels adds about 30 minutes.

  • Taxi from Keflavík airport

Taxis wait in front of the terminal 24 hours a day, and the ride to the capital area takes about 30 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Availability can be thin when several flights land at night.

  • Public bus 55

Strætó route 55 runs daily from about 7:30 to 23:00 between the airport and BSÍ in Reykjavík, taking about 1 hour 20 minutes. It leaves from the Kjóavellir stop about 150 meters from the terminal, and tickets are bought on board.

  • Blue Lagoon transfer

Destination Blue Lagoon coaches, Flybus packages and taxis link the airport with the Blue Lagoon, about 23 km away. The drive takes about 20 minutes, and shuttles closer to 30.

  • Rental car

Rental desks are in the arrivals hall, and cars are collected at Kjóavellir, about a five-minute walk away. Winter driving on Route 41 can be slowed by snow, ice and wind.

  • Private transfer

A pre-booked driver meets you in the arrivals hall and drives you about 45 minutes to central Reykjavík. It must be arranged in advance.

Preguntas frecuentes

How far is Keflavík Airport from Reykjavík?

Keflavík International Airport is about 50 km southwest of Reykjavík. The drive on Route 41 takes about 45 minutes in normal conditions, and the Flybus reaches the BSÍ bus terminal in about 45 minutes. Taxis take 30 to 90 minutes depending on traffic, and snow, ice or strong wind can slow the road in winter.

Is Keflavík Airport in Reykjavík?

No. Keflavík International Airport is on the Reykjanes Peninsula, next to the town of Keflavík and about 50 km from Reykjavík. Reykjavík has its own smaller city airport, used mainly for domestic flights and Greenland, but nearly all international flights to Iceland land at Keflavík, so plan for a road transfer into the capital.

How many terminals does Keflavík Airport have?

Keflavík International Airport has one passenger terminal, known as Leifsstöð. It is divided into a Schengen area and a non-Schengen area, which has passport control and serves flights to the UK, North America and other countries outside Schengen. All airlines use the same building, and the arrivals hall, buses and taxis are in one place.

Which airlines fly to Keflavík Airport?

Icelandair is the main airline at Keflavík, with flights across Europe and North America. Other airlines include easyJet, SAS, Wizz Air, Jet2.com, British Airways, Lufthansa, Finnair, Transavia and, mostly in summer, Delta, United, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines and WestJet. In 2025, 28 airlines flew from the airport to 100 destinations.

How do I take a taxi from Keflavík Airport?

Taxis line up in front of the terminal 24 hours a day. The ride to the capital area takes about 30 to 90 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions. Taxis are metered, and at night availability can be limited when several flights land together. Hopp Taxis also works from the airport and offers its own app.

Is there a bus from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík?

Yes. The Flybus leaves from just outside the terminal about 35 to 45 minutes after each flight lands and reaches the BSÍ bus terminal in about 45 minutes, with optional minibus connections to hotels. Public Strætó bus 55 runs daily from about 7:30 to 23:00, takes about 1 hour 20 minutes and leaves from a stop about 150 meters away.

Is there Uber at Keflavík Airport?

No. Uber, Lyft and other international ride-sharing services do not operate in Iceland. At Keflavík your options are the taxi rank outside the terminal, taxi apps such as Hopp, airport coaches like the Flybus, public bus 55, rental cars and pre-booked transfers. Taxis run around the clock, which helps with very early arrivals.

What do I need to enter Iceland at Keflavík Airport?

Iceland is in the Schengen Area, so you pass passport control only when arriving from outside Schengen. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which records fingerprints and a facial image and has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. The planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation, and some nationalities need a Schengen visa.

How do I get from Keflavík Airport to the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is about 23 km from Keflavík Airport, roughly a 20-minute drive by car or taxi, while shuttles take closer to 30 minutes. Destination Blue Lagoon runs direct coaches from the airport, and Flybus also offers lagoon transfer packages. Public Strætó buses do not serve the lagoon, and luggage storage is available there.

Can I rent a car at Keflavík Airport?

Yes. Avis, Budget, Hertz and other companies have desks in the arrivals hall, and vehicles are collected at Kjóavellir, about a five-minute walk from the terminal. Booking ahead is recommended. Route 41 to Reykjavík is a dual carriageway, but winter snow, ice and wind can make driving slower, so check road conditions first.

What time zone, currency and weather should I expect in Iceland?

Iceland is on UTC+0 all year and does not change its clocks for daylight saving time. The currency is the Icelandic króna (ISK), and cards are accepted almost everywhere. The weather is cool and changes quickly, with wind and rain common in every season, so bring warm, waterproof layers even in summer.

Who operates Keflavík Airport and how busy is it?

Keflavík International Airport is operated by Isavia, Iceland's state-owned airport company. It handled about 8.1 million passengers in 2025, around 2% fewer than in 2024, partly because the airline Play stopped flying. London was the most popular destination city, and Copenhagen had the most flights to and from the airport.
