Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) serves Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, and is the country's main international gateway. It is run by the state company EAAI.
International flights link Managua with Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Houston in the United States, Mexico City, Panama City, San José in Costa Rica, San Salvador and Guatemala City, with seasonal service to Montréal. Airlines include Avianca, Copa Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Aeroméxico Connect and WestJet. La Costeña flies domestic routes to Bluefields, Corn Island and Puerto Cabezas on the Caribbean coast.
The airport has one passenger terminal for both international and domestic flights and a single runway of about 2,440 m.
The airport is about 11 km from downtown Managua, a drive of about 20 to 30 minutes. From here, most travelers head into Managua, to the colonial city of Granada and Laguna de Apoyo, to León, or south to the Pacific beaches around San Juan del Sur.

At immigration, US citizens need a passport valid for at least six months, an onward or return ticket and cash for the tourist entry stamp, which allows stays of up to 90 days. You may be asked for proof of funds.
After immigration, collect your bags at baggage claim and pass through customs, where you must declare cash of 10,000 US dollars or more.
Once you exit, the official taxi ranks and taxi cooperative desks are just outside arrivals. Confirm the fare with the driver or dispatcher before you get in. Pre-booked drivers wait in the arrivals area with a name sign, so look for your name as you come out and share your flight number in advance so your driver can follow any delay.
Managua is hot all year, with the main dry season from about November to April. The city uses Central Standard Time (UTC−6) with no daylight saving time, and the currency is the Nicaraguan córdoba (NIO).
An official taxi or a pre-booked transfer suits most travelers, especially those heading on to Granada, León or the coast.
Official taxi ranks and cooperative desks are just outside arrivals, and the ride to central Managua takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Taxis are not metered, so agree on the fare before you leave.
A pre-booked driver meets you at arrivals and drives you directly to Granada in about 45 to 60 minutes, León in about 2 hours or San Juan del Sur in about 2.5 to 3 hours. It needs booking in advance.
Uber and inDrive operate in Managua, but coverage is patchy and cars can be scarce at night. Treat them as a backup rather than your main plan.
Shared tourist shuttles run between Managua and travel hubs such as Granada and San Juan del Sur on set daily schedules. Book 24 to 48 hours ahead from November to April.
Buses to Granada leave regularly from the UCA station in Managua, which you reach by taxi from the airport. It is the slowest option and awkward with large luggage.
