Munich Airport (MUC), officially Flughafen München "Franz Josef Strauß", serves Munich and southern Bavaria in Germany. It handled about 43.4 million passengers in 2025, second in Germany after Frankfurt.
Lufthansa runs its second hub here, with flights across Germany and Europe and long-haul routes to North America, Asia and Africa. Partners such as United Airlines, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, Austrian Airlines and Swiss add more links, while Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines connect Munich with the Gulf, Istanbul and the United States. Condor, Discover Airlines, TUI fly and easyJet fly mostly to leisure and European city destinations. In 2025, 96 airlines served 232 destinations from Munich.
There are two terminals. Terminal 1 handles most airlines outside Star Alliance, and Terminal 2 handles Lufthansa Group airlines and their Star Alliance partners. The Munich Airport Center and the S-Bahn station sit between them.
The airport lies about 28.5 kilometers northeast of central Munich, near Freising, off the A92 motorway. From here travelers head into Munich, to Freising and Erding, to Landshut, Regensburg and Nuremberg by regional train, and to Innsbruck and the mountain resorts of the Alps.

After landing, follow the signs to passport control if you arrive from outside the Schengen Area. Germany is in the Schengen Area: if you hold a non-EU passport, the Entry/Exit System (EES), fully in place since April 2026, records your fingerprints and photo at passport control, and the ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Flights from other Schengen countries skip passport control.
Collect your bags in the baggage hall and pass through customs into the public arrivals area. Terminal 2 has a single public exit on Level 03, while Terminal 1 has separate exits in each module, A to E, so check which module your flight uses.
Outside, taxi ranks wait at the arrival areas of both terminals, and ride-hailing pickup points are signposted "Ride App Pick Up." Pre-booked drivers wait in the public arrivals area with a name sign. The S-Bahn station lies between the two terminals and is reached by following the green S signs. Use only marked taxis from the official ranks rather than accepting rides offered inside the terminal.
Munich runs on Central European Time and uses the euro. Winters are cold, with snow possible, and summers are warm.
The S-Bahn suits most travelers heading into central Munich, while a taxi or private transfer is easier with heavy luggage or for destinations outside the city.
Lines S1 and S8 leave from the station between the terminals and reach Munich Hauptbahnhof in about 40 minutes, with a train roughly every 10 minutes combined. The S8 also runs through the night at lower frequency; trains can be crowded at peak times.
Taxi ranks are at the arrival and departure areas of Terminals 1 and 2. The ride to central Munich takes about 40 minutes and varies with traffic on the motorway.
The bus runs every 20 minutes between both terminals, Munich North (Schwabing) and Munich Central Station, taking about 45 minutes to the station. It is open to passengers of any airline.
The Airport Express regional train runs from the station between the terminals to Freising, Moosburg, Landshut, Regensburg and Nuremberg, without a change in Munich.
Ride-hailing apps such as Uber have signposted "Ride App Pick Up" points at both terminals. You agree the pickup point in the app, and the walk from arrivals takes a few minutes.
Pre-booked drivers meet you in the public arrivals area of your terminal. This is practical for Alpine resorts, Innsbruck or other places that need a change of train.

Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are linked on foot through the Munich Airport Center, and the walk between them takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
Gates K and L of Terminal 2 are in a satellite building that is not reachable on foot; an underground train runs to it from the Terminal 2 main building.
The Flughafen München rail station sits between the two terminals, and the Lufthansa Express Bus stops at Terminal 2 and at several points in Terminal 1.

Munich Airport is about 28.5 kilometers (17.7 miles) northeast of central Munich, near the town of Freising. The S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 take about 40 minutes to Munich Hauptbahnhof, and a taxi ride to the city center takes around 40 minutes, depending on traffic on the A9 and A92 motorways.
No. Munich Airport is outside the city, near the town of Freising, about 28.5 kilometers northeast of central Munich. It opened in May 1992, replacing the old Munich-Riem airport, which closed the day before. Plan for about 40 minutes of travel between the terminals and the city center, whether you take the S-Bahn or a taxi.

Lufthansa, Lufthansa City Airlines, Eurowings, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti and Star Alliance partners such as United, Air Canada, Swiss, Austrian and Singapore Airlines use Terminal 2. Terminal 1 serves most other airlines, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Delta, American Airlines, British Airways, Condor, TUI fly, easyJet and Turkish Airlines.
Taxi ranks are located at the arrival and departure areas of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and a taxi service point is on Level 03 of Terminal 2. Take a taxi from the marked ranks only. The trip to central Munich takes about 40 minutes, longer during rush hour on the motorways.
Take S-Bahn line S1 or S8 from the Flughafen München station between the two terminals. Trains reach Munich Hauptbahnhof in about 40 minutes, and together the two lines run roughly every 10 minutes. The S8 runs through the night at reduced frequency. Follow the green S signs from arrivals to reach the platforms.
Yes. The Lufthansa Express Bus runs every 20 minutes between both terminals and Munich Central Station, stopping at Munich North in Schwabing. The trip to Central Station takes about 45 minutes, and the bus is open to passengers of any airline. Regional MVV buses also link the airport with Freising and Erding.
Yes. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber can pick you up at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Follow the signs for "Ride App Pick Up" after leaving arrivals and agree the exact pickup point in the app. Additional ride-app points are at the Hilton, Novotel and Ibis Styles hotels at the airport.

The ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Check visa rules for your nationality before you travel.
The Airport Express regional train (ÜFEX) runs from the station between the terminals to Freising, Moosburg, Landshut, Regensburg and Nuremberg, so you do not need to go through central Munich. The Lufthansa Express Bus also links Terminal 2 with Nuremberg. A taxi or private transfer is another option with a lot of luggage.
Yes. A Lufthansa Express Bus route links Terminal 2 with Innsbruck in Austria, and shuttle and transfer services run from the airport to ski and mountain resorts. By train, you first travel into Munich and change there. A private transfer avoids changes and is easier with skis or heavy bags.
Munich uses Central European Time, UTC+1, and moves to daylight saving time, UTC+2, from late March to late October. The currency is the euro, and ATMs are available in both terminals. Winters are cold with possible snow, and summers are warm, so check the forecast before you pack.
Munich Airport is operated by Flughafen München GmbH. It handled about 43.4 million passengers in 2025, making it the second-busiest airport in Germany after Frankfurt. In 2025, 96 airlines served 232 destinations in 72 countries from Munich, and Lufthansa runs one of its two main hubs here.
