Consejos de llegada a Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport

Puerto Rico is a US territory, so if you fly in from the US mainland there is no immigration or customs check: you walk straight to baggage claim. On an international flight you go through US Customs and Border Protection primary inspection, collect your bags and then pass customs and agriculture checks, which takes about 15 to 45 minutes; US entry rules such as a visa or ESTA apply.

Baggage claim is on the arrivals level (Level 1) of Terminals A and B, along with the ground transportation area.

Outside baggage claim, taxis wait at the stands on the arrivals level of Terminal A and Terminal B. Fares are regulated by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, and airport dispatchers at the stands can help. Uber pickups are at the west end of Terminal A and at columns 16 to 19 outside Terminal B, and pre-arranged private cars pick up at Terminals A and B; use these marked areas rather than accepting offers inside the terminal.

Puerto Rico uses Atlantic Standard Time (UTC-4) all year with no daylight saving time, and the currency is the US dollar. The weather is warm and humid year-round.

Transporte terrestre

A taxi or rideshare suits most travelers, since Isla Verde, Condado and Old San Juan are all within about 15 minutes of the airport.

  • Taxi from San Juan airport

Taxis wait at the stands on the arrivals level of Terminals A and B, with fares regulated by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. The ride to Old San Juan takes about 15 minutes; lines can form when several flights land together.

  • Rideshare

Uber picks up at the west end of Terminal A and at columns 16 to 19 outside Terminal B baggage claim. Waits can grow at peak arrival times.

  • Private transfer

Pre-arranged private and executive cars pick up passengers at Terminals A and B. It is the easiest option for groups or longer trips to Fajardo, Dorado or Rincón, but you need to book ahead.

  • Bus to Isla Verde and Old San Juan

Public buses stop on the upper (departures) level: route T5/D53 serves Isla Verde and Old San Juan, D53 serves Condado and the Convention Center, and E40 runs along Avenida Piñero. The bus to Old San Juan takes about 50 minutes and is awkward with large bags.

  • Rental car

About 14 rental companies operate at SJU. A car is useful for El Yunque, Fajardo or the west coast, but city traffic and parking in Old San Juan can be difficult.
