Zürich Airport (ZRH) serves Zurich, Switzerland, and is the country's largest airport, with about 32.6 million passengers in 2025. It lies in Kloten and neighboring municipalities, about 9 km north of central Zurich.
SWISS uses the airport as its hub, with flights across Europe and long-haul routes to New York, Chicago, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, São Paulo, Johannesburg, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Edelweiss flies to holiday destinations, while Lufthansa, easyJet, Emirates, Qatar Airways, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Singapore Airlines also serve Zurich.
Check-in, arrivals, shops and the railway station are in the Airport Centre. Flights leave from three docks: Dock A for Schengen flights, Dock B for Schengen and non-Schengen flights, and Dock E for non-Schengen flights, reached by the Skymetro.
The station under the Airport Centre has about 13 trains an hour to Zürich HB, taking 9 to 13 minutes, and tram line 10 also runs to the city. Direct trains continue to Winterthur, St. Gallen, Konstanz, Lausanne and Interlaken, and there are EuroCity trains to Munich.

If you arrive from outside the Schengen area, you go through passport control; flights from Schengen countries have no passport check. Travelers from outside the EU and EFTA are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which applies at Switzerland's Schengen external borders and has been fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation.
After collecting your bags and passing customs, you come out into the Arrival 1 or Arrival 2 hall in the Airport Centre. Pre-booked drivers usually wait in the arrivals area with a name sign. Taxi ranks are at Arrival 1 and Arrival 2, and the railway station is directly below the Airport Centre, reached by escalators and lifts. Rideshare pickups use the marked spaces outside Check-in 1 and Check-in 2 on the departures level, so allow a few minutes to walk there.
Zurich uses Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer), and the currency is the Swiss franc (CHF). Winters are cold, and summers are mild.
The train is the simplest option for most travelers going to central Zurich or other Swiss cities, since the station sits right under the Airport Centre.
About 13 trains an hour run from the station under the Airport Centre to Zürich HB, taking 9 to 13 minutes. Direct InterCity trains also reach Winterthur, St. Gallen, Lausanne and Interlaken, though some cities need a change at Zürich HB.
Glattal light rail line 10 runs from the airport to Zurich's Bahnhofplatz/HB, and line 12 goes to Stettbach. It is slower than the train but stops in districts north of the center.
Taxi ranks are outside Arrival 1 and Arrival 2. Taxis go door to door, which helps with heavy luggage, but they cost more than the train.
Uber pickups are in the spaces marked Limousine Taxi outside Check-in 1 and Check-in 2. The app shows the exact zone, which is on the departures level rather than at the arrivals exit.
Pre-booked drivers meet passengers in the arrivals area with a name sign. This suits groups, ski trips and late arrivals, though it needs booking in advance.

Not quite. Zürich Airport lies just outside the city of Zurich, mainly in the municipality of Kloten, with parts in Rümlang, Oberglatt, Winkel and Opfikon, all in the canton of Zurich. It is about 9 km north of the city center and is linked to it by frequent trains, the Glattal light rail and taxis.
Zürich Airport has one landside building, the Airport Centre, where all passengers check in and arrive, and three docks for flights. Dock A handles Schengen flights, Dock B handles Schengen and non-Schengen flights, and Dock E, the midfield dock, handles non-Schengen flights. The Skymetro underground train links Dock E with the Airside Centre, where all departing passengers pass security.
SWISS has its hub at Zurich and flies to cities across Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia. Edelweiss flies to holiday destinations, and other airlines include Lufthansa, easyJet, British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines. All airlines use the Airport Centre for check-in and arrivals.
Taxi ranks are outside the Arrival 1 and Arrival 2 halls of the Airport Centre. Taxis take you door to door, which helps with heavy luggage or late arrivals when trains are less frequent. They cost more than the train or tram, so many travelers heading to central Zurich use the railway station directly below the Airport Centre instead.
Zurich Airport railway station is underground, directly below the Airport Centre, and is reached by escalators and lifts. About 13 trains an hour run to Zürich HB, taking 9 to 13 minutes. Direct InterCity trains go to Winterthur, St. Gallen, Bern, Lausanne, Interlaken and Konstanz, and EuroCity trains run to Munich every two hours.
Yes. The Glattal light rail stops are reached from the Airport Centre. Tram line 10 runs from the airport to Bahnhofplatz/HB in central Zurich, and line 12 runs to Stettbach. The tram is slower than the train to Zürich HB, but it stops in districts such as Oerlikon on the way, which can be closer to some hotels.
Uber pickups at Zürich Airport are in the parking spaces marked Limousine Taxi outside Check-in 1 and Check-in 2. From the arrivals halls, go up to the departures level and walk to the check-in area shown in the app. The app gives the exact pickup zone after you request a ride, so allow a few minutes to walk there.
Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, so passengers from outside Schengen pass passport control at Zurich, while Schengen flights have no passport check. Travelers from outside the EU and EFTA are registered in the Entry/Exit System, with fingerprints and a facial image taken on a first entry. The planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation.
Most travelers take the train from the station under the Airport Centre. Direct InterCity trains run to Bern, Lausanne and St. Gallen, and every two hours to Interlaken; for other cities, such as Lucerne, you may need to change at Zürich HB. Ski resorts in Graubünden and the Bernese Oberland are also reached by rail, rental car or pre-booked transfer.
Zurich uses Central European Time, UTC+1, and moves to summer time, UTC+2, from late March to late October. The currency is the Swiss franc (CHF); Switzerland does not use the euro, so plan to pay in francs or by card. Winters are cold and summers are mild, and snow is common in the Alps from late autumn to spring.
Zürich Airport handled about 32.6 million passengers in 2025, a record for the airport and 4.5% more than in 2024. It is run by Flughafen Zürich AG, a company listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange, and has three runways. SWISS, Edelweiss and Helvetic Airways have their hubs or bases there, which makes it Switzerland's largest airport.
