Sobre Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is the main international airport of Lisbon, Portugal. It is the hub of TAP Air Portugal, which flies to cities across Europe, Brazil, North America and Africa.

Other airlines link Lisbon with their own hubs, including Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, United and Delta, while easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Transavia serve European cities. Azores Airlines flies to the Azores.

There are two terminals. Terminal 1 handles all arrivals and most departures; Terminal 2 is used only for departures by some low-cost airlines and is reached by a free shuttle bus.

The airport sits inside the city, about 7 km northeast of the historic center. The Metro red line starts at Terminal 1 and reaches Saldanha in about 20 minutes, and Gare do Oriente, a main railway station, is about 10 minutes away on the same line. From the airport, travelers head to Baixa, Alfama, Chiado, Belém, Parque das Nações, Sintra and Cascais.

Consejos de llegada a Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport

All flights arrive at Terminal 1, even those that depart from Terminal 2. If you come from outside the Schengen area, you pass passport control before baggage claim; flights from Schengen countries skip it. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation.

Collect your bags in the baggage hall, pass customs and walk out into the Terminal 1 arrivals hall.

Pre-booked drivers usually wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign. The official taxi rank is in front of the arrivals building; insist that the driver uses the meter. Uber and Bolt pickups are in the short-stay car park P2, just north of arrivals. For the Metro, follow signs to Aeroporto station at the southern end of the arrivals area, and Carris city buses stop outside arrivals. Ignore people offering rides inside the hall.

Lisbon uses Western European Time with daylight saving time, and the currency is the euro. Summers are hot and dry, and winters are mild and wetter.

Transporte terrestre

The Metro suits most travelers with light bags, while taxis, rideshare and pre-booked transfers are easier with luggage or late at night.

  • Metro red line

Aeroporto station is at the end of the Terminal 1 arrivals area, and trains run every few minutes to Saldanha in about 20 minutes. Change at Alameda or São Sebastião for Baixa and Chiado; the trains can be crowded with large suitcases.

  • Taxi from Lisbon airport

The taxi rank is in front of the Terminal 1 arrivals hall. The ride to the center is short, but ask for the meter or agree on the fare before you leave, since overcharging of visitors is reported.

  • Rideshare

Uber and Bolt pick up in the short-stay car park P2, just north of arrivals. At busy times waits can be long, and the rank taxis may be quicker.

  • Private transfer

A pre-booked driver meets you in the Terminal 1 arrivals hall and drives straight to your address. It is the simplest option for Sintra, Cascais or other trips beyond the city.

  • Carris city buses

Carris buses stop at the arrivals area and run toward Marquês de Pombal and Amoreiras, with night routes to Baixa, Cais do Sodré and Oriente. Buses stop often and have little room for luggage.

  • Train from Oriente

Gare do Oriente, about 10 minutes from the airport on the Metro red line, has regional and long-distance trains, including the Sintra line and services to Porto.

  1. Free shuttle bus

A free shuttle bus links Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 roughly every 10 minutes, with a short break in service in the early hours. The ride takes a few minutes.

  2. Where to catch it

In Terminal 1, the shuttle stop is outside the departures hall and is signposted. You cannot walk between the two terminals.

  3. Arriving by Metro

Terminal 2 has no Metro station. Ride to Aeroporto station at Terminal 1, go up to departures and take the shuttle bus.

Preguntas frecuentes

How far is Lisbon airport from the city center?

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport is about 7 km northeast of the historic center, inside the city limits. The Metro red line reaches Saldanha in about 20 minutes, and from there you can change for Baixa and Chiado. A taxi or car is usually the quickest way when traffic is light.

Is Lisbon airport in the city?

Yes. The airport sits in the Olivais area of Lisbon, surrounded by city neighborhoods, about 7 km from the historic center. It is still often called Portela, after the area next to it. The Metro, Carris buses and taxis all serve it directly.

How many terminals does Lisbon airport have?

Lisbon airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 is the main building and handles all arriving flights and most departures. Terminal 2 is a smaller, departures-only terminal used by several low-cost airlines. A free shuttle bus runs between the two terminals roughly every 10 minutes; you cannot walk between them.

Which terminal does my airline use at Lisbon airport?

TAP Air Portugal, easyJet and all the large network airlines use Terminal 1. Several low-cost airlines, such as Ryanair, Wizz Air and Transavia, depart from Terminal 2. Every flight arrives at Terminal 1, whichever terminal it leaves from. Check your boarding pass or the airline's website before departure, as assignments can change.

How do I take the Metro from Lisbon airport?

Aeroporto station, the end of the Metro red line, is at the southern end of the Terminal 1 arrivals area. Trains run every few minutes to Oriente, Alameda, Saldanha and São Sebastião, reaching Saldanha in about 20 minutes. For Baixa and Chiado, change to the green line at Alameda or the blue line at São Sebastião.

Where are the taxis at Lisbon airport?

The official taxi rank is in front of the Terminal 1 arrivals hall. Taxis in Lisbon run on a meter, and the ride to the center is short. Some visitors report drivers overcharging or quoting a set fare, so ask for the meter or agree on the fare before you leave the rank.

Can I use Uber or Bolt at Lisbon airport?

Yes. Uber and Bolt both operate in Lisbon, and pickups at the airport are in the short-stay car park P2, just north of the Terminal 1 arrivals building. At busy times demand is high and rides may take a while to match, so the taxi rank can be quicker when queues are long.

Is there a bus from Lisbon airport to the city?

Yes. Carris city buses stop at the arrivals area and run toward Marquês de Pombal and Amoreiras, with night routes to Baixa, Cais do Sodré and Gare do Oriente. Buses stop often and have little luggage space, so the Metro is usually faster. The former Aerobus express service ended in 2023.

Do I need an entry form to arrive in Lisbon?

Portugal is in the Schengen area and has no separate arrival form. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Passengers on flights from other Schengen countries do not pass passport control at Lisbon.

How do I get from Lisbon airport to Sintra or Cascais?

Both are outside Lisbon. For Sintra, take the Metro red line to Oriente and board a Sintra line train. For Cascais, ride the Metro to Cais do Sodré, changing lines on the way, and take the Cascais line train along the coast. A taxi or pre-booked car goes there directly without changes.

What time zone and currency does Lisbon use?

Lisbon is on Western European Time, UTC+0, and moves to UTC+1 for daylight saving time from late March to late October, one hour behind most of continental Europe. The currency is the euro. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild and wetter than the rest of the year.

Who operates Lisbon airport and how busy is it?

The airport is run by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, part of VINCI Airports under a concession that runs to 2062. It handled about 36.1 million passengers in 2025, up from about 35.1 million in 2024, making it the busiest airport in Portugal. It is the main hub of TAP Air Portugal.
