Sobre Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO), usually called Porto Airport, serves Porto and the north of Portugal. It handled about 16.9 million passengers in 2025, which makes it the main airport for the region.

TAP Air Portugal links Porto with Lisbon, Funchal, Geneva, Paris and London, and flies long-haul to Newark, Boston, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Ryanair, easyJet, Transavia, Vueling and Wizz Air cover a wide network across Europe and North Africa, while Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Iberia, British Airways and Turkish Airlines connect to their hubs. United Airlines and Delta Air Lines fly to the New York area, and Air Transat and Azul serve Canada and Brazil.

All flights use a single passenger terminal, with Metro do Porto's Aeroporto station directly beneath it. The airport sits about 11 km northwest of central Porto, with the drive taking roughly 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic, and the Metro line E ride to Trindade about 27 minutes.

From the airport, travelers head to central Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, north to Braga and Guimarães, east to the Douro Valley, and across the border to Vigo in Spain.

Consejos de llegada a Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport

After landing, passengers from outside the Schengen Area go through passport control before reaching the baggage hall. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation.

Baggage claim and customs are on the arrivals level of the single terminal; after customs you walk straight into the public arrivals hall.

If you booked a driver, they will usually wait in the arrivals hall holding a name sign. The official taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals exit. For Uber or Bolt, turn right outside, walk past the taxi rank and bus stops to the far end of the kerb and look for the blue TVDE sign, as app drivers cannot stop at the exit. For the Metro, take the escalators or lifts down from the arrivals hall to Aeroporto station and validate an Andante card before the platform.

Porto has a mild Atlantic climate with rainy winters. The time zone is Western European Time (UTC+0, UTC+1 in summer) and the currency is the euro.

Transporte terrestre

Metro line E is the simplest way into central Porto for most travelers, with taxis and rideshare better for heavy luggage or late arrivals.

  • Metro line E to Porto

Aeroporto station is directly below the terminal, and line E runs to Trindade in about 27 minutes, with connections to the rest of the network and Campanhã station. You need an Andante card; trains run less often outside peak hours and stop around midnight.

  • Taxi from Porto airport

The official taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals exit. The ride to central Porto takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

  • Rideshare (Uber, Bolt)

App pickups use the TVDE zone at the far northern end of the arrivals kerb, a 2 to 3 minute walk past the taxi rank. Drivers cannot stop directly at the arrivals exit.

  • STCP city buses

STCP buses 601 and 602 run from the airport to Cordoaria near the Clérigos Tower, and the 3M night bus runs to Avenida dos Aliados after the Metro closes. Buses are slower than the Metro and have limited luggage space.

  • Bus to Braga and Guimarães

The GetBUS shuttle connects the airport with Braga and Guimarães in about 50 minutes. A separate coach runs to Vigo in Spain twice a day on weekdays and once a day at weekends.

  • Private transfer

Pre-booked drivers meet passengers in the arrivals hall with a name sign. This suits families, groups and trips beyond the Metro network, such as the Douro Valley.

Preguntas frecuentes

How far is Porto airport from the city center?

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is about 11 km northwest of central Porto. By taxi or car the trip usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Metro line E covers the route from the airport station to Trindade, in the heart of the city, in about 27 minutes, with connections to other lines from there.

Is Porto airport in the city of Porto?

No. The airport lies outside the city limits, about 11 km northwest of central Porto, in the wider metropolitan area. It is still closely linked to the city by Metro line E, STCP buses and the A28, A41 and A4 motorways, so most visitors reach their hotel in under an hour.

How many terminals does Porto airport have?

Porto airport has one passenger terminal, opened in its current form in 2006. It handles all domestic, Schengen and international flights, with separate areas for Schengen and non-Schengen departures. The Metro station is directly beneath the building, and the taxi rank, bus stops and rideshare zone are along the arrivals kerb outside.

Which airlines fly to Porto airport?

TAP Air Portugal, Ryanair and easyJet run many of the routes, alongside Transavia, Vueling, Wizz Air, Volotea and Eurowings. Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Iberia, British Airways and Turkish Airlines connect Porto to their hubs. Long-haul flights go to Newark, New York–JFK, Boston, Toronto, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, among others. All use the single terminal.

How do I get a taxi at Porto airport?

The official taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals exit of the terminal. Licensed taxis use meters, and the trip to central Porto takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. Use the marked rank rather than accepting offers from people inside the arrivals hall, and confirm the destination before setting off.

Does the Metro go from Porto airport to the city center?

Yes. Metro do Porto line E (the violet line) starts at Aeroporto station, directly below the terminal, and runs to Trindade in about 27 minutes. At Trindade you can change to other lines, including line D to São Bento. You need an Andante card, validated at the yellow readers, and trains run until around midnight.

Can I use Uber or Bolt at Porto airport?

Yes. Uber and Bolt both operate at Porto airport. Pickups take place in the TVDE zone at the far northern end of the arrivals kerb: turn right after leaving the terminal and walk past the taxi rank and bus stops, about two to three minutes. Drivers are not allowed to stop directly outside the arrivals exit.

Is there a night bus from Porto airport?

Yes. When the Metro is closed, the STCP 3M night bus leaves the airport at half past the hour between 00:30 and 05:30 and runs to Avenida dos Aliados in central Porto. During the day, STCP lines 601 and 602 link the airport with Cordoaria, near the Clérigos Tower, though they are slower than the Metro.

What do I need to enter Portugal at Porto airport?

Portugal is in the Schengen Area, so travelers from outside it pass passport control on arrival. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Check passport validity and any visa needs for your nationality before you fly.

How do I get from Porto airport to Braga or Guimarães?

The GetBUS shuttle runs from the airport to Braga and Guimarães, with a journey time of about 50 minutes. Taxis, rental cars and private transfers also cover the route by motorway. Both cities are popular day trips or bases for exploring the Minho region north of Porto, and both have plenty of hotels and guesthouses for overnight stays.

How do I get from Porto airport to the Douro Valley?

The Douro Valley lies east of Porto and is not served by the Metro. Most travelers drive, take a taxi or private transfer, or ride Metro line E into Porto and continue by train from Campanhã or São Bento stations along the Douro line. A rental car gives the most freedom to visit quintas and riverside villages.

What time zone and currency does Porto use?

Porto uses Western European Time, UTC+0, moving to UTC+1 for daylight saving time from late March to late October. The currency is the euro, and cards are widely accepted. The climate is mild Atlantic, with warm summers and cool, rainy winters, so a light rain jacket is useful outside the summer months.

Who operates Porto airport and how busy is it?
