Heraklion International Nikos Kazantzakis Airport (HER) is the main airport for Crete, by the sea near Nea Alikarnassos, just east of Heraklion city. It has one passenger terminal, extended in 2018, for domestic and international flights, and the airfield is shared with the military.
Flights from Athens and other Schengen countries arrive without passport checks. If you come from outside the Schengen area, as many summer visitors do from the UK, you queue at passport control. On summer weekends, when many charter flights land close together, passport control, baggage reclaim and the arrivals area can be very crowded. Pre-booked drivers meet passengers in the arrivals area.
Crete is on Eastern European Time (EET), two hours ahead of the UK, and Greece uses the euro.

Heraklion Airport, also called Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, is the one most people mean by "Crete Airport". Crete also has an airport at Chania in the west of the island, so check which one your flight uses.
