João Paulo II Airport (PDL) is the airport of Ponta Delgada on São Miguel in the Azores, and sits at Relva, less than 3 km west of the city center. It is the hub of Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores. All flights, international, mainland and inter-island, use one passenger terminal.
Flights from mainland Portugal and other Schengen countries arrive with no passport control. Flights from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Cabo Verde arrive in the non-Schengen area, where non-EU travelers pass border control first. Collect your bags in the baggage claim hall, then walk through customs into the arrivals area on Level 0, where car rental desks and the exit doors are.
The Azores are on Azores Time, UTC−1 in winter and UTC+0 in summer, one hour behind Lisbon all year.
Schengen entry. The Azores are part of Portugal and the Schengen Area. Citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and many other countries can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa.
Entry/Exit System. Non-EU travelers arriving from outside Schengen are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System, which records a photo and fingerprints on first entry. ETIAS travel authorization is planned to start in late 2026; check whether it applies to you before you fly.
Passport validity. Your passport should have been issued within the last ten years and be valid at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.
Euro. Portugal uses the euro (EUR); ATMs and a currency exchange counter are in the terminal.
Ride-hailing. Bolt and, since April 2026, Uber operate on São Miguel, with few drivers, mainly in and around Ponta Delgada.
