About Kuala Lumpur International Airport

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), widely known as KLIA, is the main gateway to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It sits in Sepang District, Selangor, about 45 km south of the city center, and handled about 63 million passengers in 2025.

Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air Malaysia run their hubs here, and AirAsia and AirAsia X use the airport as their main base. Flights link Kuala Lumpur with Malaysian cities such as Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, and with destinations across Southeast Asia, China, India, Australia, the Middle East and Europe, including London, Paris and Amsterdam.

The airport has two separate terminals. Terminal 1 handles full-service airlines and has a satellite building reached by the Aerotrain, while Terminal 2, formerly called klia2, is the base for AirAsia and other low-cost carriers. The terminals are connected by train and a free shuttle bus.

The KLIA Ekspres train reaches KL Sentral in about 28 minutes from Terminal 1, and the drive into the city usually takes 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic. From the airport, travelers head to the Kuala Lumpur city center, Putrajaya, the Genting Highlands and Melaka.

Arrival tips for Kuala Lumpur International Airport

Before you fly, submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days of your arrival; it is required for foreign visitors, and some nationalities can later use the autogates. At Terminal 1, international gates are in the satellite building, so you ride the Aerotrain to the main building for immigration. After passport control, collect your bags in the baggage hall and pass through customs into the public arrivals area.

For a taxi, buy a fixed-fare coupon at the official taxi counter in the arrivals hall rather than accepting offers from drivers who approach you. Grab and other e-hailing rides use designated pick-up areas, at Level 1 of the Main Terminal Building in Terminal 1. If you have booked a driver, they normally wait in the public arrivals hall after customs. Follow signs to the rail station for the KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral.

Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid all year, with frequent afternoon rain. Malaysia uses Malaysia Time (UTC+8) with no daylight saving time, and the currency is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR).

Ground transportation

The KLIA Ekspres train is the quickest way to KL Sentral, while a taxi or Grab suits travelers going straight to a hotel.

  • KLIA Ekspres train

Non-stop trains run from both terminals to KL Sentral in about 28 minutes from Terminal 1 and 33 minutes from Terminal 2. Most hotels need a short taxi or LRT/MRT ride from KL Sentral.

  • KLIA Transit train

Uses the same tracks as the KLIA Ekspres but stops at intermediate stations such as Bandar Tasik Selatan on the way to KL Sentral. It is slower but useful for Putrajaya and southern suburbs.

  • Taxi from Kuala Lumpur airport

Fixed-fare coupon taxis are sold at counters in the arrivals hall, in budget and premier classes. The ride to the city takes roughly 45 to 75 minutes, and a late-night surcharge applies.

  • Grab and e-hailing

Grab works at both terminals, with designated pick-up areas; at Terminal 1 it is at Level 1 of the Main Terminal Building. Waits can be longer at busy times.

  • Bus to KL Sentral

Airport coaches such as Skybus run to KL Sentral about every 30 minutes. It is the slowest option, at around 75 minutes.

  • Private transfer

A pre-booked car with a driver meets you in the arrivals hall and goes straight to your hotel, which helps with luggage or late arrivals.

Moving between terminals

  1. Free shuttle bus

A free shuttle runs 24 hours a day about every 10 to 15 minutes and takes around 10 minutes. It leaves from Door 4, Level 1 at Terminal 1 and from Bay A10, Level 1 of the Transportation Hub at Terminal 2.

  2. Train between terminals

KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit trains link the two terminals in about 3 minutes for a small fare. Board at the rail station in Terminal 1 or at Gateway@klia2.

  3. Clear immigration first

There is no airside link between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, so passengers changing terminals must clear immigration and customs before moving across.

  4. Taxi or e-hailing

A taxi or Grab ride between terminals is an option when you are short on time or carrying heavy luggage.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Kuala Lumpur airport from the city center?

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is about 45 km south of the city center, in Sepang District, Selangor. The KLIA Ekspres train reaches KL Sentral in about 28 minutes from Terminal 1, while the drive by taxi or Grab usually takes 45 to 75 minutes, depending on traffic and where in the city you are going.

Is Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Kuala Lumpur?

No. The airport is outside the city, in Sepang District in the state of Selangor, about 45 km south of central Kuala Lumpur. It also lies close to Putrajaya, the federal administrative center, and Cyberjaya. Trains and roads link the airport with the capital, so it still serves as the main airport for Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding Klang Valley.

How many terminals does KLIA have?

KLIA has two terminals. Terminal 1 is the main terminal for full-service airlines and includes a satellite building linked by the Aerotrain. Terminal 2, known as klia2 until it was renamed, opened in 2014 and handles AirAsia and most low-cost flights. The two buildings are separate, so travelers should check which one their airline uses before heading to the airport.

Which terminal does AirAsia use at Kuala Lumpur airport?

AirAsia and AirAsia X use Terminal 2, the former klia2. Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air Malaysia, Firefly jet flights and full-service foreign airlines such as Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific use Terminal 1. As a general rule, low-cost airlines fly from Terminal 2 and full-service airlines from Terminal 1, but the terminal code on your ticket is the reliable guide.

How do I get between KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2?

A free shuttle bus runs between the terminals 24 hours a day and takes about 10 minutes, from Door 4, Level 1 at Terminal 1 and Bay A10 at Terminal 2. The KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit trains also connect them in about 3 minutes. There is no airside link, so you must clear immigration and customs before changing terminals.

How do taxis work at Kuala Lumpur airport?

Official airport taxis use a coupon system. You buy a fixed-fare coupon at the taxi counter in the arrivals hall, choosing between budget and premier cars, and hand it to the driver at the taxi rank. A surcharge applies late at night. Use the counter rather than drivers who approach you inside the terminal, and expect 45 to 75 minutes to the city.

Is there a train from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur?

Yes. The KLIA Ekspres runs non-stop from both terminals to KL Sentral, taking about 28 minutes from Terminal 1 and 33 minutes from Terminal 2, with trains every 15 to 20 minutes. The KLIA Transit uses the same line but stops at intermediate stations. From KL Sentral, you can connect to the LRT, MRT, monorail or a taxi.

Can I use Grab at Kuala Lumpur International Airport?

Yes. Grab and other e-hailing apps operate at both terminals from designated pick-up areas. At Terminal 1, the pick-up area is on Level 1 of the Main Terminal Building, where drivers have a limited time at the kerb. Fares are shown in the app before you book, and waiting times can be longer during busy periods.

Do I need an arrival card to enter Malaysia?

Yes. Foreign visitors must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days before arriving. Malaysian permanent residents and a few other groups are exempt. Citizens of certain countries can use the immigration autogates at KLIA after enrolling their passport at a manual counter on a first visit, but the MDAC is still needed for each trip.

How do I get from KLIA to Putrajaya or Genting Highlands?

Putrajaya lies between the airport and Kuala Lumpur, so it is reached by road with a taxi, Grab or pre-arranged transfer, or by the KLIA Transit train, which stops at intermediate stations on the way to KL Sentral. Genting Highlands lies north of Kuala Lumpur, so most travelers go by road, by car or via bus connections from the city.

What time zone and currency does Kuala Lumpur use?

Kuala Lumpur uses Malaysia Time, UTC+8, with no daylight saving time, so the clock never changes during the year. The currency is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR). The weather is tropical: hot and humid all year, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and heavier rain during the monsoon months. Light clothing and an umbrella are useful at any time of year.

Who operates Kuala Lumpur International Airport and how busy is it?

The airport is operated by Malaysia Airports (MAHB). It handled about 63 million passengers in 2025, up from about 57 million in 2024. It opened in June 1998, has three runways, and is the hub for Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air Malaysia and the main base for AirAsia and AirAsia X.
