Passenger Terminal
The single terminal for all international and domestic flights, including Rodrigues, with check-in halls A and B on Level 1, the immigration hall on Level 2 and baggage claim and arrivals on Level 0.
Also known as: Mauritius Airport, MRU Airport, SSR Airport, SSR International Airport. Formerly Plaisance Airport.
MRU · FIMP · Plaine Magnien
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is the international airport of Mauritius, the island nation in the Indian Ocean. It stands at Plaine Magnien in the southeast of the island, close to Mahébourg, and is the hub of Air Mauritius.
Air Mauritius flies to Europe, Africa, India, Asia and Australia, as well as to Rodrigues and Réunion. Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Air France, British Airways, Condor, Edelweiss, Kenya Airways and South African Airways link the island with Dubai, Istanbul, Paris, London, Frankfurt, Zurich, Nairobi and Johannesburg, and Air Austral and Air Seychelles fly within the Indian Ocean. The airport handled about 3.9 million passengers in 2019.
All flights use one passenger terminal, opened in 2013 and joined to the older 1986 building, with check-in halls A and B and a single international boarding hall.
The airport is about 48 km (30 miles) southeast of Port Louis. From here, travelers head north to Grand Baie and the beaches of the north coast, east to Belle Mare, west to Flic en Flac and southwest to Le Morne, or a few minutes up the road to Mahébourg and Blue Bay.

On arrival you go first to the immigration hall on Level 2, where you complete immigration and health formalities. Have your passport, your return or onward ticket and the QR code from the Mauritius All in One Travel Form ready; if you did not fill it in online, you complete a disembarkation card instead. Many nationalities enter visa-free for short stays, so check the rules for yours before you fly.
Baggage claim is on Level 0. Strollers and oversized items come out on a dedicated belt next to belt 1, and the airline baggage desks are near belt 6. You then pass through customs, where you declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty.
The customs exit leads into the Tour Operators and Hotels Hall on Level 0. Currency exchange counters, the tourist information desk and the airport taxi counter are here, and the car rental booths are also on Level 0. Public buses leave from a stop in the parking lot.
Mauritius is on Mauritius Time (UTC+4) all year and uses the Mauritian rupee.
Most visitors staying at a beach hotel take a taxi or a pre-booked car, since buses take longer and need changes for most resort areas.
The airport taxi counter is in the Tour Operators and Hotels Hall on Level 0, opposite the customs exit, and the airport publishes an official taxi fare list. Taxis go door to door to any hotel on the island.
A pre-booked driver meets you in the Tour Operators and Hotels Hall after customs and drives you straight to your hotel or villa, useful for families, groups and late arrivals.
Bus 198 links the airport with Port Louis and Mahébourg, bus 9 runs between Mahébourg and Curepipe, and bus 10 between Mahébourg and Rivière des Galets, all from a stop in the airport parking lot. They are slow with luggage and most beach areas need a change.
Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Avis, Budget and several local companies have booths on Level 0 of the terminal. Mauritius drives on the left.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is about 48 km (30 miles) southeast of Port Louis, at Plaine Magnien. The drive usually takes about an hour, longer in weekday rush hour around the capital. Bus 198 links the airport with Port Louis but makes many stops, so most visitors with luggage take a taxi or a pre-booked car.
Grand Baie is at the northern tip of the island, so it is one of the longest drives from the airport, usually about an hour and a quarter by road via the highway past Port Louis. There is no direct bus from the airport to Grand Baie, so most visitors take a taxi or a pre-booked car.
Yes. SSR is short for Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the country's first prime minister, and the airport is often called SSR International Airport, Mauritius Airport or by its code, MRU. It was formerly known as Plaisance Airport. It is the only international airport on the main island of Mauritius.
Mauritius airport has one passenger terminal, opened in 2013 and joined to the older 1986 building. Check-in halls A and B are on Level 1, the immigration hall is on Level 2, and baggage claim and the arrivals area are on Level 0. Domestic flights to Rodrigues use the same terminal.
You need a passport valid for your whole stay with a blank page, and immigration may ask for a return or onward ticket. Many nationalities, including British visitors, enter visa-free for short stays, while others need a visa in advance or on arrival. Fill in the Mauritius All in One Travel Form online before you fly.
It is the government's online arrival form, covering immigration and health details, and it is completed before you fly on the official Safe Mauritius website. Keep the QR code it gives you, printed or on your phone, to show on arrival. If you have not filled it in, you complete a disembarkation card at the airport instead.
The airport taxi counter is in the Tour Operators and Hotels Hall on Level 0, opposite the customs exit in arrivals. The airport publishes an official taxi fare list, so you can check the fare to your area before you set off. Taxis go door to door to hotels anywhere on the island.
Yes. Public buses stop in the airport parking lot: bus 198 runs between Port Louis and Mahébourg, bus 9 between Mahébourg and Curepipe, and bus 10 between Mahébourg and Rivière des Galets. They run daily but are slow with luggage, and most beach areas need a change of bus.

Yes. Car rental booths are on Level 0 of the terminal, with Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Avis, Budget, Dollar Thrifty and several local companies. Mauritius drives on the left, and roads off the main highway are often narrow and busy, so many visitors prefer a taxi or a pre-booked car for the first trip to the hotel.
