Terminal 1
The larger terminal, used by Alaska, Delta Connection, Frontier, Hawaiian, Volaris, Viva Aerobus and some Southwest flights. All international arrivals clear US Customs and Border Protection here.
Also known as: Oakland Airport, Oakland International Airport, OAK Airport. Formerly San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport, Metropolitan Oakland International Airport.

Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK) is the airport for Oakland, California, and the East Bay side of the San Francisco Bay Area in the USA. The Port of Oakland runs it, and until 2024 it was called Metropolitan Oakland International Airport; most travelers still say Oakland Airport.
Southwest Airlines flies the most routes, across California and the West, to Hawaii and to cities such as Denver, Chicago Midway, Austin and Dallas Love Field. Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Delta Connection, Frontier, JSX and Advanced Air add more domestic flights, while Volaris, Viva Aerobus and Volaris El Salvador fly to Mexico and San Salvador. The airport handled about 9.2 million passengers in 2025.
Two terminals stand side by side and are joined past security: Terminal 1 handles most airlines and all international arrivals, and Terminal 2 is used by Southwest. The BART station is across the street, with trains to Coliseum station for the wider BART network.
The airport sits on the bay shore beside Interstate 880, about 7 miles (11 km) south of downtown Oakland. From here travelers head to downtown Oakland and Jack London Square, Alameda, Berkeley and Emeryville, across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco, about 25 minutes away without traffic, or east to Walnut Creek and the rest of Contra Costa County.

Most flights into Oakland are domestic, so you walk off the plane and follow the signs straight to baggage claim in your terminal. If you arrive from Mexico or El Salvador, you land at Terminal 1 and clear US Customs and Border Protection first: passport control, then baggage collection and customs before you enter the public area. Visitors need a US visa or an approved ESTA before they fly.
Terminal 1 serves most airlines and Terminal 2 serves Southwest, and each has its own baggage claim. Check your airline's arrivals screen for the carousel number.
Outside, signs lead to taxis, rideshare pickup on the third curb, the free shuttle to the Rental Car Center and the BART station across the street, where trains run to Coliseum station for connections to San Francisco, Berkeley and the rest of the Bay Area. AC Transit buses also stop at the terminals. Pre-booked drivers meet passengers in baggage claim or at the curb outside, as their confirmation says.
Oakland is on Pacific Time and uses the US dollar.
BART is the cheapest way into San Francisco or Berkeley; a taxi or pre-booked car is easier with luggage, late at night or for addresses away from the stations.
The BART station is across the street from the terminals. Trains reach Coliseum station in about 8 minutes, where you change for San Francisco, Berkeley and the rest of the BART network; service stops around midnight.
Line 73 links the airport with Coliseum BART station every 15 minutes from early morning to around midnight, and the overnight Line 805 runs to downtown Oakland. Buses make many stops, so they are slow with luggage.
Taxis wait at the signed taxi stands outside the terminals and go door to door across the East Bay and to San Francisco. Fares are metered, so heavy Bay Bridge traffic adds to the cost.
Rideshare pickups are on the third curb, in sections 3C2 to 3C9. Expect a wait for your car at busy times.
A pre-booked car meets you at the airport and drives you door to door, useful for families, groups, late arrivals and trips to San Francisco or Walnut Creek.

Most travelers simply call it Oakland Airport or Oakland International.
