Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is the main international airport of Shanghai, China. It is the main hub of China Eastern Airlines and its subsidiary Shanghai Airlines, and a base for Juneyao Air and Spring Airlines. Flights reach cities across China, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America and Oceania, with foreign airlines including Lufthansa, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways and United Airlines.
The airport has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, each linked by an automated train to a satellite concourse (S1 and S2). A third terminal is under construction.
Pudong airport sits on the coast about 30 km east of the city center. It is different from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), on the west side of the city, which handles mostly domestic and regional flights; the Airport Link Line connects the two in about 40 minutes.
From the airport, most travelers head to the Bund and Nanjing Road, the Lujiazui business district in Pudong, the People's Square area, and Hongqiao Railway Station for high-speed trains to Suzhou, Hangzhou and Beijing.

Before landing, fill in China's online arrival card through the NIA 12367 app, the National Immigration Administration website or its WeChat or Alipay mini program; paper cards and kiosks are also available at immigration. Nationals on China's visa-free list can stay up to 30 days through 31 December 2026, eligible transit passengers can use the 240-hour visa-free transit with an onward ticket to a third country, and everyone else needs a visa.
If you arrive at a satellite gate, an automated train takes you to the main terminal for passport control. Collect your bags in the baggage hall, then pass through customs into arrivals.
Outside, follow the signs to the official taxi queue at the curb, or walk to the shared station between the two terminals for the Maglev, Metro Line 2 and the Airport Link Line. If you booked a driver, meet them in the arrivals hall. Turn down anyone inside the terminal who offers you a ride.
Shanghai has hot, humid summers and cool, damp winters. Local time is China Standard Time (UTC+8, no daylight saving), and the currency is the renminbi (yuan, CNY); Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely used.
The Maglev plus metro suits most daytime travelers heading into the city, while a taxi is simpler with luggage or after the Maglev closes.
Use the official taxi queue outside Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. The drive to central Shanghai takes about 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic.
The Maglev reaches Longyang Road in Pudong in about 8 minutes, running roughly from 7 am to just before 10 pm. You then change to Metro Line 2 for the city center, which adds time with luggage.
Metro Line 2 runs from the Pudong Airport Terminal 1 & 2 station through Lujiazui, People's Square and Nanjing Road to Hongqiao. It is direct but slow, with many stops before downtown.
The Airport Link Line, opened in December 2024, connects Pudong airport with Hongqiao airport and Hongqiao Railway Station in about 40 minutes, useful for onward high-speed trains.
Airport bus lines run to places such as the Jing'an Temple area, Shanghai Railway Station and Hongqiao airport. Journeys take about 50 minutes to more than an hour.
A pre-booked driver meets you in arrivals and takes you to your hotel without changes, which helps after late flights, but it needs booking in advance.
