Vienna International Airport (VIE) lies in Schwechat, in the state of Lower Austria, southeast of Vienna and next to the A4 motorway. It is operated by Flughafen Wien AG and is the home base of Austrian Airlines.
Check-in is split between Terminal 1, Terminal 1A, a separate building opposite Terminal 1, and Terminal 3, used by Austrian Airlines and most Star Alliance airlines. Arrivals are simpler: all passengers come out into the central arrivals hall in Terminal 3.
If you arrive from outside the Schengen Area, you pass passport control before baggage claim; flights from Schengen countries skip it. After collecting your bags and passing customs, you exit into the arrivals hall. Vienna is on Central European Time (UTC+1) and moves to UTC+2 from late March to late October.
Entry rules. Austria is in the Schengen Area. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Check the visa rules for your nationality before you travel.
Ignore ride offers in the arrivals hall. The airport warns against accepting rides from people who approach you in the hall, as these drivers often lack the required license. Look for your driver with your name sign.
Three check-in areas for departures. Ryanair and many European airlines use Terminal 1, leisure airlines such as Condor, Pegasus Airlines and SunExpress use Terminal 1A, and Austrian Airlines and most Star Alliance airlines use Terminal 3. Tell us your airline when you book your return.
