Vienna International Airport (VIE) is the main airport for Vienna, Austria. It lies in Schwechat, about 18 km (11 miles) southeast of the city center, next to the A4 motorway, and handled 32.6 million passengers in 2025.
Austrian Airlines is the home carrier, with about 46% of passengers in 2025, flying across Europe and long-haul to North America, the Middle East and Asia. Ryanair is the second-largest airline, with a large European network, and carriers such as Lufthansa, Eurowings, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Emirates and Qatar Airways add routes to Germany, Turkey and the Gulf hubs.
Check-in is split between Terminal 1, Terminal 1A, a separate building opposite Terminal 1, and Terminal 3, which is used by Austrian Airlines and most Star Alliance airlines. Terminals 1 and 3 share one building, and all arriving passengers come out into the central arrivals hall.
A railway station sits under the terminals, with railjet trains to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, and the drive to the city center takes about 20 minutes. From the airport, travelers head to central Vienna, to Bratislava and Brno by bus, and by rail to Linz, Graz and Salzburg.

If you arrive from outside the Schengen Area, you pass passport control before reaching baggage claim; flights within Schengen skip this step. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation.
After collecting your bags and passing customs, you come out into the central arrivals hall in Terminal 3, which serves every terminal. The ÖBB ticket counter and machines for the trains are in the hall, with the platforms reached directly from it.
The official taxi rank is directly in front of the arrivals hall, and City Transfer counters inside the hall arrange onward rides. Pre-booked drivers usually wait in the arrivals hall as you exit. The airport warns against accepting rides from people who approach you in the hall, as these drivers often lack the required license.
Vienna runs on Central European Time and switches to summer time from late March to late October. Austria uses the euro.
Railjet trains to Wien Hauptbahnhof and taxis from the rank outside arrivals suit most travelers heading into Vienna.
Taxis wait at the rank directly in front of the arrivals hall. The drive to the city center takes about 20 minutes, longer in rush-hour traffic on the A4.
Long-distance railjet trains leave from the station below the terminals and reach Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, every 30 minutes. Direct trains also run to Linz and Salzburg.
During the S-Bahn trunk line closure (7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027), the S7 runs only between the airport and St. Marx, so most city trips need a change. Check ÖBB for current times.
While the rail line is closed, the CAT runs as a nonstop premium coach between Terminal 3 and Wien Mitte in about 21 minutes, every 12 to 15 minutes. It is expected to return to rail after October 2027.
Express buses link the airport with city hubs such as Praterstern and Karlsplatz. They are handy for central hotels near those stops but slower than the train in traffic.
Bolt operates at the airport, with pickup points shown in the app. Intercity buses from FlixBus, RegioJet and Slovak Lines stop at the airport on routes to Bratislava.
