Christchurch International Airport (CHC) is the main airport for Christchurch and the Canterbury region on New Zealand's South Island. It stands in Harewood, about 12 km (7.5 miles) northwest of the city center, beside Russley Road (State Highway 1) and at the end of Memorial Avenue.
Air New Zealand flies the most routes, linking Christchurch with Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown and towns across both islands, and with Australia. Jetstar and Qantas add flights to Auckland, Wellington and Australian cities, while Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Fiji Airways and, in season, United, Cathay Pacific and China Southern connect Christchurch with Dubai, Singapore, Nadi, San Francisco, Hong Kong and Guangzhou.
Domestic and international flights share one integrated terminal, with a common check-in hall on the ground floor and separate wings for regional, domestic and international gates. The International Antarctic Centre sits beside the airport, which is also a base for Antarctic programs.
From the airport, most travelers head into central Christchurch, Riccarton and the Port Hills, to the port at Lyttelton, or on to Akaroa on Banks Peninsula, Kaikōura on the coast to the north, and the ski fields and lakes of the Southern Alps.

On an international flight, have your passport and your New Zealand Traveler Declaration (NZTD) ready; visitors who travel without a visa usually also need an NZeTA approved before departure. After passport control you collect your bags and go through biosecurity and customs, where you must declare most food, plant and animal products and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents. Detector dogs and X-ray machines check bags, and undeclared risk goods bring an instant fine.
Domestic passengers collect their bags at domestic baggage claim on the ground floor of the same terminal. Everyone leaves through the ground-floor arrivals area.
Outside, the taxi stand is by International Arrivals (Door 7), and Metro buses and the Super Shuttle leave from the northern end of International Arrivals (Door 9), next to the Novotel. The terminal opens at 3:00 and has no sleeping facilities.
New Zealand is on New Zealand Standard Time (UTC+12), with daylight saving time (UTC+13) from late September to early April, and uses the New Zealand dollar.
The Metro bus is the cheapest way into the city; a taxi or pre-booked car is easier with luggage or for Banks Peninsula and the ski fields.
Buses leave from the northern end of International Arrivals (Door 9). Route 3 runs to the city center via Avonhead and Riccarton every 10 minutes on weekdays, and route 29 via Fendalton every 30 minutes; both make stops on the way.
The Port to Port bus runs from the airport through the city center to Lyttelton every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes at weekends.
The taxi stand is outside International Arrivals (Door 7), served by several local companies, and goes door to door anywhere in the city.
A shared door-to-door van service from its stand outside International Arrivals (Door 9); it may stop for other passengers on the way.
Uber has a dedicated pickup and drop-off zone at the terminal.
A pre-booked car meets you in the arrivals area, useful for families, groups, late arrivals and trips to Akaroa or Kaikōura.

Christchurch has one integrated terminal for both domestic and international flights. It has a shared check-in hall on the ground floor and three wings: regional gates 3 to 14, domestic gates 15 to 22a and international gates 23 to 35. All arriving passengers leave through the ground-floor arrivals area, so there is no terminal to change between.

A taxi or pre-booked car goes straight to the port through the Lyttelton road tunnel, which is easier with luggage or when you are joining a cruise ship.

Check the rules for your nationality.
Declare all food, plant and animal products on your NZTD and at biosecurity, or put them in the amnesty bins. Used hiking boots, tents and other outdoor gear must be declared too. Officers, detector dogs and X-ray machines check bags after baggage claim, and undeclared risk goods bring an instant fine, so declare anything you are unsure about.
