Also known as: Palmerola Airport, Comayagua International Airport, Tegucigalpa Palmerola Airport, XPL Airport.
XPL · MHPR · Tegucigalpa
Palmerola International Airport (XPL) is in the Comayagua valley of central Honduras and is the international gateway for Tegucigalpa, the capital. Since December 2021 it has taken over the international passenger flights that used to land at Toncontín, which now handles domestic flights.
American Airlines, United Airlines, Copa Airlines, Avianca, Aeroméxico and Iberojet fly here. Nonstop routes link Palmerola with Miami, Dallas, Houston, Panama City, San Salvador and Mexico City, and Iberojet connects Honduras with Madrid and Barcelona in Spain.
The airport has one passenger terminal with boarding bridges and a single runway, and it shares the site with the Soto Cano air base. It sits a short drive south of the city of Comayagua, about 15 minutes by road. Tegucigalpa is about 73 km to the southeast along the CA-5 highway, a drive of roughly one hour or a little more depending on traffic.
From the airport, most travelers head to Tegucigalpa, to Comayagua and its colonial center, or north along the CA-5 toward Lake Yojoa and San Pedro Sula.

After you leave the aircraft, follow the signs to immigration (Migración) in the main terminal. Have your passport ready, and check before you fly whether your nationality must complete the online pre-check (prechequeo) on the portal of Honduras's National Migration Institute (INM). Automated kiosks and eGates are in use, but for now they serve Honduran citizens only, so most visitors queue at the staffed desks.
Collect your bags from the carousel and pass through customs (Aduanas) before entering the public arrivals hall. Counters for authorized taxis, shared shuttles to Tegucigalpa and Comayagua, and car rental are in this hall, and the official taxi stand is just outside. Use only authorized taxis and shuttle counters and politely decline offers from people approaching you inside the terminal. If a driver is collecting you, agree beforehand on the exact meeting point in the arrivals hall.
Honduras uses Central Standard Time all year with no daylight saving time, and the currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL). The Comayagua valley sits lower than Tegucigalpa and is usually warmer.
Most travelers heading to Tegucigalpa take a shared shuttle or a pre-arranged private car, since the drive is about an hour.
Authorized taxis wait at the stand outside arrivals and run 24 hours, with fixed zone fares to Comayagua, Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and other towns. Confirm the fare at the official counter before you get in.
Several authorized companies sell seats at counters in the arrivals hall, with departures to Tegucigalpa, Comayagua and other towns in central Honduras. Expect about 60 to 90 minutes to Tegucigalpa, and some waiting while the vehicle fills.
A pre-booked driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you door to door. It suits families, groups and travelers with heavy luggage heading to Tegucigalpa or elsewhere.
Uber operates in the area, but cars for the long trip to Tegucigalpa are not always available. Check availability in the app before relying on it.
Rental counters are in the arrivals hall, and booking ahead is recommended. The CA-5 highway leads south to Tegucigalpa and north toward Lake Yojoa and San Pedro Sula.

Palmerola airport is about 15 minutes by road from the center of Comayagua. The airport sits just south of the city in the Comayagua valley. Palmerola International Airport has one passenger terminal. All scheduled flights, arrivals and departures use this building, which has boarding bridges, immigration and customs halls, and counters for taxis, shuttles and car rental in the public arrivals area. The Comayagua valley lies lower than Tegucigalpa, at about 630 meters, so it usually feels warmer on arrival than the capital, which sits higher in the mountains.
Palmerola International Airport is run by Palmerola International Airport (PIA), a private concessionaire working under a public-private partnership with the Honduran state. The airport was inaugurated in October 2021 and received its first commercial flight in December 2021.
