Main Terminal
The single terminal, with domestic flights to New Zealand cities and international flights to Australia in separate areas. Passengers board and leave aircraft on foot across the apron.
Also known as: ZQN Airport, Queenstown International Airport, Queenstown New Zealand Airport.
ZQN · NZQN · Queenstown
Queenstown Airport (ZQN) is the airport for Queenstown, in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island, and for the wider Southern Lakes area. It stands in Frankton on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, about 8 km (5 miles) east of Queenstown town center.
Air New Zealand and Jetstar link Queenstown with Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and fly across the Tasman to Australia together with Qantas and Virgin Australia, to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Small operators such as Glenorchy Air run scenic flights to Milford Sound. The airport handled about 2.7 million passengers in 2025, around a million of them on international flights.
All flights use one single-level terminal with domestic and international areas and no jet bridges, so passengers walk across the apron or use stairs.
From the airport most travelers head into Queenstown town center, usually 15 to 20 minutes by road along Frankton Road, or to Arrowtown, about 20 minutes away. Others continue to the ski fields at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Cardrona, to Glenorchy at the head of the lake, or over the Crown Range to Wanaka, about an hour's drive.

On international flights you walk from the aircraft to the terminal and go through passport control, where you need your passport, any visa or NZeTA, and your digital arrival declaration (NZTD), completed before you arrive.
Next comes the biosecurity check. Declare all food, plant and animal products, and outdoor gear such as hiking boots, tents and ski or bike equipment, which must be clean. Officers give you a colored card that sets your exit lane, then you collect your bags, including oversize items, and walk out into the main terminal.
Domestic passengers collect luggage from domestic bag claim 1 or 2 and walk straight into the terminal.
Inside you find the information desk, Travelex currency exchange and ATMs. The public bus stops, the taxi stand and the rideshare pickup zone are just outside the terminal and signposted, and pre-booked drivers meet you in the arrivals area.
The terminal is open from 04:00 to 22:30 and closes overnight, so arrange onward transportation before a late arrival. New Zealand uses the New Zealand dollar.
The bus is the cheapest way into town; a taxi or pre-booked car is easier with ski gear, luggage or a late arrival.
Buses leave from signposted stops outside the terminal for Frankton and Queenstown town center, generally every 15 minutes in the day and about every 30 minutes in the evening. Change at the Frankton bus hub for Arrowtown and Jacks Point.
Taxis wait at the signposted taxi stand outside the terminal and go door to door to town, Frankton and Arrowtown. Fares climb quickly on longer trips.
App-based rides collect passengers in the signposted rideshare pickup zone close to the terminal. Availability can thin out late in the evening.
Shuttle operators drop passengers at their accommodation, and some continue to Wanaka. You may wait for other passengers and stop at their hotels.
Rental companies serve the airport, useful for touring the South Island. New Zealand drives on the left, and winter mountain roads may need chains.
A pre-booked car or van meets you at the terminal and drives straight to your address, useful for families, groups with ski gear and late arrivals.

Queenstown Airport is in Frankton, about 8 km (5 miles) east of Queenstown town center. The drive along Frankton Road usually takes 15 to 20 minutes, longer at busy times. Orbus public buses run from outside the terminal to town, and taxis, rideshare and pre-booked cars wait close to the terminal building.
Queenstown Airport has one single-level terminal with separate domestic and international areas and nine gates. There are no jet bridges, so passengers walk across the apron and use stairs to board. Domestic passengers collect bags at bag claim 1 or 2, and international arrivals exit into the same main terminal after biosecurity.
Air New Zealand and Jetstar fly to Queenstown from Auckland and Wellington, and Air New Zealand also from Christchurch. Across the Tasman, Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia fly from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and Jetstar from the Gold Coast. Small operators such as Glenorchy Air run scenic flights to Milford Sound.
Yes. Queenstown Airport handles international flights to and from Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, alongside domestic flights within New Zealand. International arrivals go through passport control and a biosecurity check inside the terminal. About a million of its roughly 2.7 million passengers in 2025 flew internationally.
You need a valid passport and either a visa or, for visa-waiver nationalities, an NZeTA, which is usually issued with the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy. Australian citizens need neither. Every traveler completes the free digital arrival declaration (NZTD), ideally online before the flight. Check Immigration New Zealand for your nationality before you travel.
New Zealand's biosecurity rules are strict. Declare all food, plant and animal products, and outdoor gear such as hiking boots, tents, fishing gear, and ski or bike equipment, which should be clean before you fly. Undeclared risk items can bring an instant fine. Biosecurity officers give you a colored card that sets your exit lane.
Yes. Orbus public buses leave from signposted stops outside the terminal for Frankton and Queenstown town center, generally every 15 minutes during the day and about every 30 minutes in the evening. For Arrowtown, Jacks Point and other areas, change at the Frankton bus hub. Timetables vary by route and day, so check before you travel.
The taxi stand and the rideshare pickup zone are just outside the terminal building and clearly signposted. Follow the airport signs once you leave the arrivals area. A taxi goes door to door to Queenstown town center, Frankton, Kelvin Heights and Arrowtown, which is easiest with luggage, skis or a late-evening arrival.
Wanaka is about an hour's drive from Queenstown Airport over the Crown Range Road, or longer via Cromwell. Shuttle operators, including SkyDrive, which stops at Cardrona, Cromwell and Luggate, run to Wanaka, and private cars and rental cars make the trip door to door. In winter, mountain roads can need chains.
No. The terminal is open from 04:00 to 22:30 and passengers cannot stay inside overnight. The airport has a 10:00 pm noise curfew, so flights land and leave within those hours. If your flight arrives late in the evening, arrange your onward transportation and accommodation before you travel.
Yes, two. The Air New Zealand Regional Lounge is after domestic security for eligible Airpoints and Koru members on domestic Air New Zealand flights. The Manaia Lounge in International Departures accepts Priority Pass, LoungeKey, Plaza Premium and DragonPass members, and passengers on any international airline can pay to enter for up to three hours.
Short and long stays use the terminal parking lot directly in front of the building, and P20 Express Parking holds the closest bays; both give the first 20 minutes free. The terminal lots often fill up, so the airport suggests Park & Ride on Brookes Road, linked to the terminal by a free shuttle about every 40 minutes.
Yes. Card-operated keyless lockers stand outside the terminal at Zone C (Transfers), charged per 12-hour period. If the lockers are full, the Airport Information Desk, open 08:30 to 17:00 daily, may be able to store items, depending on space. Lost property is also handled at the Information Desk.
