Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is the main airport for Venice, Italy. It sits at Tessera, on the edge of the Venetian Lagoon, about 7.5 km northeast of the historic center. It is a different airport from Treviso Airport (TSF), about 30 km away, which some airlines market as Venice Treviso.
Airlines fly from here to cities across Europe, with longer routes to Dubai, Doha and Istanbul and seasonal flights to North America. Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air and Volotea run large networks, while ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Delta and United link Venice with their hubs.
All flights use one terminal: arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the floor above, with separate Schengen and non-Schengen areas. A covered walkway of about 10 minutes leads from arrivals to the airport's own water dock.
From the dock, Alilaguna water buses and water taxis cross the lagoon to the city. By road, buses and taxis reach Piazzale Roma, the bus terminal at the edge of the historic center, in about 15 to 25 minutes. From the airport, travelers head to San Marco, Rialto, Murano, the Lido, Mestre and the Marittima cruise terminal.

If you arrive from outside the Schengen area, you pass passport control before baggage claim; flights from Schengen countries skip it. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation.
Collect your bags in the arrivals hall on the ground floor, then pass customs into the public area.
From there you have two directions. Water transport is signed "Water Transport" or "Boats to Venice": a covered walkway of about 10 minutes leads to the dock, where the Alilaguna water buses and the water taxis leave. Road transport is right outside the arrivals hall, with the bus stops for Piazzale Roma and Mestre and the official taxi stand. Pre-booked drivers usually wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign; water taxi drivers meet passengers at the dock. Use only the official taxi stand and the signed water taxi desk.
Venice uses Central European Time with daylight saving time, and the currency is the euro. Summers are hot and humid, and autumn and winter bring fog and occasional high water (acqua alta) in the city.
Most travelers take the bus to Piazzale Roma or an Alilaguna water bus, and choose a water taxi when speed or heavy bags matter more.
Leaves from the airport dock, about 10 minutes' walk from arrivals. The Blue and Orange lines stop at Murano, Fondamente Nove, Rialto, San Marco and other stops, taking around 60 to 75 minutes; it is slow, but it reaches stops close to many hotels.
Private boats leave from the same dock and take about 30 minutes to the historic center, often stopping near your hotel. It is the quickest way into the lagoon city, but boats carry only a small group.
ATVO express buses and ACTV line 5 (Aerobus) leave from outside arrivals and take about 20 to 25 minutes to Piazzale Roma. From there you continue on foot or by vaporetto, which can be hard with heavy luggage on bridges.
The official taxi stand is in front of the arrivals hall. A road taxi reaches Piazzale Roma in about 15 to 20 minutes, or drives straight to hotels in Mestre and on the mainland, but cannot go further into the historic center.
A pre-booked driver meets you in arrivals and drives you to Piazzale Roma, Mestre, the cruise terminal or towns on the mainland. For hotels in the historic center, the road part ends at Piazzale Roma unless the transfer is by boat.
ACTV lines 15 and 45 and ATVO buses run to Venice Mestre railway station, where trains leave for the rest of Italy. Local lines stop often, so the ride is slower than the express.

Venice Marco Polo Airport is about 7.5 km northeast of the historic center, across the lagoon. By road, buses and taxis reach Piazzale Roma, the bus terminal at the edge of the old city, in about 15 to 25 minutes. By water, a water taxi takes about 30 minutes, and the Alilaguna water bus takes around an hour or more.
Yes. The airport is at Tessera, which belongs to the comune of Venice, but it is on the mainland shore of the lagoon, not in the historic center. You reach the old city by bus or taxi to Piazzale Roma, or by water bus or water taxi from the airport's own dock.
No. Treviso Airport (TSF) is a separate airport about 30 km from Venice, close to the city of Treviso, and some airlines market it as Venice Treviso. Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is the larger airport on the lagoon at Tessera. Check the airport code on your ticket before planning your trip into the city.
Venice Marco Polo has one passenger terminal, opened in 2002. Arrivals are on the ground floor and departures on the second floor, and Schengen and non-Schengen flights use separate areas. All airlines, including Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, ITA Airways and long-haul carriers, use this terminal.
Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air and Volotea run the largest networks to cities across Europe. Network airlines include ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Iberia, Swiss and TAP Air Portugal. Emirates, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines fly to their hubs, and Delta, United, American Airlines and Air Canada fly to North America, some seasonally.
Follow the water transport signs from arrivals along a covered walkway of about 10 minutes to the airport dock. From there, Alilaguna water buses run to Murano, Fondamente Nove, Rialto, San Marco and the Lido, taking roughly 60 to 75 minutes to San Marco. Water taxis leave from the same dock and take about 30 minutes.
Yes. ATVO express buses and ACTV line 5, the Aerobus, leave from the stops outside the arrivals hall and reach Piazzale Roma in about 20 to 25 minutes. Piazzale Roma is the last point reachable by road; from there you walk or take a vaporetto. ACTV line 15 and ATVO buses also run to Mestre.
The official road taxi stand is in front of the arrivals hall. A taxi takes about 15 to 20 minutes to Piazzale Roma, or can drive you to hotels in Mestre and the mainland. Road taxis cannot enter the historic center, so for a hotel on the canals you continue on foot, by vaporetto or by water taxi.
Uber operates in the Venice area and can be booked from Marco Polo Airport for trips to Mestre, the mainland and Piazzale Roma. No car can go beyond Piazzale Roma, because the historic center has no roads. For a hotel on the canals, you finish the trip on foot, by vaporetto or by water taxi.
The Marittima cruise terminal is next to Piazzale Roma. Take a bus or taxi from the airport to Piazzale Roma, then ride the People Mover, a short automated tram that links Piazzale Roma, the Marittima cruise terminal and the Tronchetto car park. Some cruises use other ports in the area, so check your embarkation terminal first.
Italy is in the Schengen area and has no separate arrival form. Non-EU travelers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026; the planned ETIAS travel authorization is not yet in operation. Travelers arriving from another Schengen country do not go through passport control at Venice.
Venice is on Central European Time, UTC+1, and moves to UTC+2 for daylight saving time from late March to late October. The currency is the euro. Summers are hot and humid, while autumn and winter can bring fog and occasional high water, known as acqua alta, in the historic center.
The airport is operated by SAVE S.p.A., a company partly owned by local authorities. Venice Marco Polo handled about 11.85 million passengers in 2025, up from about 11.6 million in 2024. It has two parallel runways, the longer one 3,300 m, and a single passenger terminal.
